San Diego grindcore band Cattle Decapitation was headlining a show at La Habra, CA, venue The 13th Frame on Wednesday night, January 7th, when violence broke out in the moshpit.
It seems that one concertgoer who took exception to being slammed into pulled out a knife and stabbed another fan in the neck. Several other fans then ganged up on the attacker and knocked him unconscious. The show was shutdown before the band could finish their set. See the video below of the band attempting to perform a new song before being informed what has happened and shut down by venue security.
This of course raises several questions. For one, why would someone be anywhere near a moshpit at a grindcore show without knowing of the certainty that they WILL be slammed into? Also, how is it that a knife made it past security into the venue in the first place? In a post-Dimebag world (Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darryl Abbott was murdered onstage in 2004 by a deranged fan at a smaller venue), oversights like this can have devastating consequences.
Luckily, this time the outcome was not as bad as it could have been; both victim and attacker were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities plan to charge the attacker with assault with a deadly weapon. Let’s hope that keeps him out of moshpits for the foreseeable future.
Cattle Decapitation is currently working on its seventh full-length album, which they hope to release sometime this year via Metal Blade.
