John Wick was certainly one of the best films of 2014, and if you happened to have liked it, then there is a chance that the title character could be back again.
The B-movie actioner starring Keanu Reeves was flashy, very entertaining, and made good use of the actor’s talents. Now, directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are talking about a potential sequel, according to Movies.com. Since the John Wick was released on Blu-ray and DVD this week, it is way too early to tell what we could see in the sequel, but Stahelski said, “We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original.”
That certainly sets the bar pretty high. Hit the jump for the full quote.
Speaking to Movies.com, here is what Stathelski said,
“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original,†Stahelski said. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.â€
No word yet if Reeves will return, although it seems like the directors are hoping for it: “If we could work with Keanu Reeves for 10 movies you’d have a really cool career.â€
John Wick was the kind of B-movie fun that seems to be missing in the past few years. It was very entertaining, and enjoyable to watch. But it also seemed to have revitalized Keanu Reeves’ career as an action star.
While it does seem promising that the directors don’t want to make a sequel for the sake of it, and I can appreciate the fact what the audience wants from a character like John Wick. It should be interesting to see what direction the character takes now that he has gotten revenge on the gang that took his dog’s life, the last gift from his dying wife.
I just hope they don’t have to kill another dog in the sequel.
