During Disney’s annual shareholders this morning, where news about Star Wars: Episode VIII and the first Star Wars, spinoff film, was revealed, officially confirmed that a sequel for 2013’s animated phenomenon Frozen is in development.
Based on the massive success of Frozen, most would consider Frozen 2 as a given that was only a matter of time, but up until today there was little mention of a sequel.
The announcement didn’t reveal much about plot or any other story details, but we do now that Josh Gad will be back as the voice of the lovable snowman Olaf. Also returning will be Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee at the helm of the project and Frozen‘s producer Peter Del Vecho.
We can also hope that Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell will be back to voice Elsa and Anna, respectively, but no word yet on the full casting front. According to Disney’s press release, John Lasseter, Disney/Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, appeared on stage with other executives and Gad and had this to say:
“We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters.” “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”
Speaking of Josh Gad, apparently he jokingly revealed that the title will be Frozen 2: Rogue One, a reference to the Star Wars spinoff movie announced this morning as well. Well played Gad, well played.
Release date for Frozen 2 has not yet been revealed. Meanwhile, fans of Frozen will be treated to a short film featuring Elsa, Anna, and Olaf as well as others with Frozen Fever that will roll ahead of Cinderella in theaters starting tomorrow, March 13, 2015.
