All my shows are back! Spoilers!
Supernatural returns, last leaving us in February with Dean (Jensen Ackles) asking Sam (Jared Padelecki) to leave the Mark of Cain obsession alone. You know how these brothers are with each other. That never happens. Truthfully, Cain (Timothy Omundson) was perfectly dandy until the Winchesters showed up. I know we haven’t seen him since then, but he did kinda flip his lid without it, to his detriment. So what does that say? Maybe Sam should just try to put it from his mind. Maybe Dean would go crazy (more crazy) too if he rids himself of the mark. I always like when Supernatural uses Sam and Dean to parallel other theology/mythology, like when Dean was destined to be Michael and Sam was destined to be Lucifer. That didn’t quite go exactly as we thought it would be played. You cannot ignore the Cain/Abel parallel possibility.
Whoa… It starts super creepy. A frightened girl hangs upside down and there are flashes of vision as if you were the victim. The opening “Then” shows many flashes of Sam saying “I don’t know.” And it foreshadows the return of Cole (Travis Aaron Wade), the hunter that tried to kill Dean Winchester while he was a fun demon and got his ass handed back to him.
Organs drained and bone marrow sucked out of bones – just a typical day in the neighborhood. Sam is reluctant to start a case so soon, but Dean, ever the hunter, wants to go all in. Cole joins the boys because it turns out one of his friends is one of the “thirsty” monsters. But he is not smart about it.
Amateur.
At least the professional brothers act smart about the case (not completely) and watch him, knowing he will lead them to his friend the monster.
Will they be able to save Cole?
Dean: “What do you think about rapid dehydration?”
Cole: “Big fan.”
Supernatural gifted us with a strong return. Yes, many times the cases and reactions seem predictable and formulaic (Brother destined for hell + brother determined to save him + case-of-the-day = quality episode). Why mess with obvious success? Supernatural is renewed for an 11th season. There are not many shows that have that kind of longevity (unless it ends with “& Order”), especially ones that don’t get as much buzz as their younger, cuter CW counterparts (Love you Sam and Dean!)
