On Supernatural last week, it was back to the big search on how to break the curse of The Mark of Cain on Dean (Jensen Ackles). Sam (Jared Padalecki) teamed up with Rowena (Ruth Connell), who told him she could not read The Book of the Damned without the decoder, The Men of Letters Werther Box. Unfortunately, it was protected by a suicide spell – a green gas that caused the affected to see crazy things, play on their guilt and fears, and cause them to commit suicide. It was a dark and creepy episode, reminiscent of the some of the earlier super scary Supernaturals. I will say, it was really good to see Benny (Ty Olsson) again in fake Purgatory.
Supernatural 10.20 “Angel Heart” review: It’s a Claire Novak (Kathryn Love Newton) episode. She’s searching for her mom who disappeared two years ago looking for her husband, Jimmy. Her mother is being held captive in a dreamlike state where she is reunited with her husband. A twisted angel is feeding on her soul a little at a time, and giving her these visions. Jimmy, as we know from previous Novak family episodes gave up his body, his vessel, so Castiel could commandeer it. He’s in heaven now. Claire ends up in the hospital, so Dean, Sam, and Castiel go help her, although she doesn’t want or “need” it.
Claire ends up bonding with all three. She’s always had a soft spot for Castiel because of the resemblance to her father. With Sam, he shows her some hunter tricks – credit cards, hiding her identity, hacking, etc. Dean plays mini-golf with her, gives her a gun, takes her on the hunt. It’s resolved not in a perfect way, but there is closure. She gets shipped off to Jody Mills (one of the good ones) with a Hunter 101 starter package (sword, giant lore book, stuffed animal, Winchesters on call).
This was one of the better episodes of the season. Even though the Mark of Cain was still referenced and hovered in the background, it was a case of the day (well… a case that pops up now and again), and really funny. The dynamic of the guys with a belligerent teenage girl was hysterical. Especially with a teenage girl who was trying to hide the pain behind the toughness. Love , love, love Dean’s “how dare you!” So funny. These are the Winchesters I love – when there’s less doom and gloom, and there’s more comedy. It’s awesome!
I have to admit though, I really miss the way Castiel used to be – all open and naive. This dark, jaded angel is too sad for me.
Supernatural airs Wednesdays at 9pm ET on The CW.
