Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll (SDRR)
Season 1 Episode 1: “Don’t Wanna Die Anonymous”
Created by Denis Leary
Directed by Michael Blieden
Written by Denis Leary
Starring Denis Leary, John Corbett, Elizabeth Gillies, John Ales, Robert Kelly, Elaine Hendrix
FOX
Air Date: Thursday, July 16th, 2015, 10:00pm

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll premiered last Thursday night, and it really was just 25 minutes of fun. Based on washed up, druggie, has-been, Johnny Rock (Denis Leary) of fictional 90s band, The Heathens, and his long lost daughter Gigi (Liz Gillies), the pilot gives us how she got the band back together – only not the same together it was before.

Be sure to check out the official music video for the Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll theme song below.

Gigi is rich and wants to be famous. She wants Johnny to reconcile with his old guitarist Flash (John Corbett), and write her some songs. Gigi is determined. She rented studio space, inviting Johnny’s manager, and gave him $2,000 to get Flash there (the reason the band broke up was Johnny slept with Flash’s wife). There was a juvenile band conversation about Gigi’s body parts, that turned out to be a sweet father moment, before she shocked them all with a killer voice. Anybody that had caught a glimpse of Liz Gillies on her Nick show Victorious, already knew that her voice was killer.

The rest of the SDRR cast rounds out this motley crew: John Ales as bassist Rehab, Robert Kelly as drummer Bam Bam, Josh Pais as manager Ira Feinbaum, and Elaine Hendrix as backup singer and Johnny’s girlfriend (in a very open relationship), Ava.

Some SDRR highlights:

– Opens as a Rockumentary.

– Dave Grohl talks about the band, saying he didn’t know if there would have been a Nirvana without The Heathens – loved that!

– Actor portraying Gaga wearing a pyramid.

– Boobs referred to as “chesticles.”

– The music – Denis Leary writes all the songs, and they are good.

– The half hour format and the lighthearted material makes the show fly by, disappointed that the show ended.

SDRR airs Thursdays at 10pm ET on FX.

FX’s synopsis:

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll (SDRR) centers on “Johnny Rock” (Denis Leary), lead singer of a legendary early 90’s New York band called The Heathens. Known for living up to their name, the band partied so long and so hard that even Keith Richards thought they needed to slow things down. The Heathens were on the brink of becoming famous for their kickass live shows and the release of their highly anticipated first album. Until they broke up. The same day the album dropped. Because lead guitarist Flash (John Corbett) found Johnny in bed with his wife. So the band became legendary for all the wrong reasons – like self-destructing sooner than any group in rock-n-roll history. 25 years later, the only thing bigger than Johnny’s ego is his prostate. The drugs he really needs now aren’t cocaine and marijuana – they’re Crestor, Cymbalta and Cialis. He’s out of work, out of money and out of show business options. That’s when a massively talented young singer named Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies) shows up – with a burning desire to be famous, a throwback appreciation for The Heathens’ only album, and a stack of cash big enough to bring the whole band back into the studio. Only this time, SHE’S the lead singer and Johnny’s just a behind-the-scenes songwriter. John Ales, Bobby Kelly and Elaine Hendrix round out the rest of this dysfunctional rock and roll family. The race is on to see who gets famous first – and for what reason.
