Of all the roles in Captain America: Civil War, the one that is still unknown to many belongs to Martin Freeman. We know that Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Renner, and Frank Grillo will all reprise their respective Marvel Cinematic Universe roles, while William Hurt will return as General Thunderbolt Ross, his role from The Incredible Hulk. The film also marks the cinematic debut of Chadwick Boseman, who will play T’Challa aka Black Panther; and Daniel Brühl, who is also in the film, says he is playing Baron Zemo, although that has yet to be confirmed.
Though we will eventually find out about Freeman’s role, there were rumors that the Sherlock star could be playing a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent or some international diplomat. Now in a new interview, the actor teases his character in the highly anticipated film. More on this below.
In an interview with BadTaste.it (via Coming Soon), Freeman said of his role:
He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.
It doesn’t get any more ambiguous than that. At least we know that he is working for the American government. But Freeman is making a point of telling us that his character’s motives are still unclear. So we can’t call him a villain just yet. But we can’t say he’s working for the good of the people either. It’s only a matter of time before everything is confirmed.
There is a chance that Freeman could be playing Everett Ross, a government official assigned to work as a liaison to the nation of Wakanda. The character is also an expert on everything Wakanda, and has a connection to T’Challa aka Black Panther. If this is true, then there is a strong possibility that Freeman could reprise his role in Black Panther. However, there is a chance that Freeman could play a character created just for the film.
Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters May 6, 2016.
