Tyrese Gibson Confirms ‘Green Lantern Corps’ Talks With Warner Bros.

Tyrese Gibson

It’s been four years since audiences saw a Green Lantern on the big screen. While the 2011 film was a disastrous flop, Warner Bros. and DC are now planning a big-screen reimagining of the character. Rather than just have one human be the Green Lantern, the studio announced Green Lantern Corps as one of their upcoming films for the DC Cinematic Universe during their panel at SDCC just a few weeks back.

Since the film is set for a 2020 release, long after Justice League Part 2 is out, its in very early development, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from courting actors. In an interview with Collider, Tyrese Gibson confirms that he has been talking to Warner Bros. about potentially starring in the Green Lantern Corps. More on the story below.

While promoting the release of Furious 7 in Abu Dhabi, Gibson confirmed to Collider that talks were happening with the studio. Here’s what he told the site,

“Well I was innocent from the beginning. I was at home eating a bowl of Lucky Charms in my drawers, my ugly feet was out, and I got about six direct messages on Instagram with photos of me as the Green Lantern. This particular fan who did this fan art said that there was a community of people that had been talking for like a month and a half about who they think would be the best Green Lantern and they all picked me. I said to them, “˜I took the oath, and I am going to commit myself to this process of seeing what’s possible.'”

Sounds like the fan campaign on social media to get Gibson to star in Green Lantern started long before the Green Lantern Corps announcement was ever made. The actor then admits that he has had a couple of meetings with the studio, and is just waiting to see what their decision will be. He also adds that even though there needs to be more diversity in superhero films, that’s not his goal when going into negotiations,

I’ve already had a couple of meetings at Warner Bros. So we’ll see what happens. I do believe that there needs to be more black superheroes out there, but that’s not even my motivation. I think I’ll be the best Green Lantern. Based on my fans, and my supporters that spent $6 billion in box office receipts, I feel like there is a fan base of fans waiting to see me put on this green suit, and do my thing. I would love to confirm something today, but I can’t.”

Fans of the Green Lantern know that there has been more than one human to wield the power of the ring. So, if the rumors are true, Gibson wouldn’t be the only Earth-based Green Lantern in the film. There are rumors saying Chris Pine would be in the film as well, though previous reports say that he is in talks to star alongside Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman as Steve Trevor.

Though Green Lantern Corps doesn’t come out until 2020, it doesn’t mean that we won’t be seeing the Green Lantern himself at some point in time. There is an off chance that he may have a part in the Justice League film, which would then lead up to Corps, much like how Wonder Woman is in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with her solo film to be released the year after.
