The world of the fashion industry is a bit beyond my comprehension, but I guess that is why we have satires like Zoolander. A decade ago, Ben Stiller starred as the dimwitted title character who was able to stop a ninja throwing star with his signature look, Blue Steel. Along with his equally beautiful (not to mention equally dimwittted) rival Hansel (Owen Wilson), they were able to stop Jacobim Mugatu’s (Will Ferrell) nefarious plan, which involved brainwashing and assassinations.
Now, many years after the film’s first release, fans have been asking for a sequel, and we are getting just that. Paramount has released the first trailer for Zoolander 2. Now they are back, and they’re older and lamer, but still somewhat funny. This time, the sequel stars Penelope Cruz as an interpol agent, Kristen Wiig as a fashion designer, Justin Bieber, Usher, and other celebrities appearing as themselves, and much more. Let’s not spoil which Sherlock character makes an appearance, instead, check out the first trailer for Zoolander 2 here below.
After a decade long absence we are finally getting a sequel to Zoolander 2 from Paramount Pictures. Ironically, the trailer starts out with Derek and Hansel being the headlining subject of a fashion show that has them walking out of coffins wearing leather suits with the words “old” and “lame” written on them. But, a little awareness and self-deprecation never hurt.
But the plot is that just before all the world’s most beautiful celebrities are killed, they take one final selfie of them with Derek’s signature Blue Steel look. Believing that there is some sort of connection (because why not), Interpol hires the irrelevant Zoolander and Hansel to the case.
Kristen Wiig is almost unrecognizable as the film’s villain. And Will Ferrell returns as the infamous Jacobim Mugatu, who has gotten a bit more muscular since we last saw him. Of course that doesn’t last very long.
While much of the comedy seems a bit dated, the physical comedy will still get you. And really how could you go wrong with Hansel trying to bring back Derek being able to stop throwing objects with just a mere look by throwing all sorts of dense objects at Zoolander.
Zoolander 2 arrives in theaters February 12, 2016.
