“I’ll bite your nipples off!”

Directed by Bruno Mattei (Rats: Night of Terror) and co-written by Claudio Fragasso (Troll 2), Women’s Prison Massacre is a brutal and bizarre entry in the “women in prison” sexploitation subgenre.

Also known as Emanuelle Escapes from Hell, Women’s Prison Massacre stars Laura Gemser (Erotic Nights of the Living Dead) as Emanuelle, a reporter on the verge of breaking a huge story about government corruption. Before she can expose the crooked politician, Emanuelle is framed and sent to a women’s prison. There, she faces unspeakable cruelty and inhumane conditions with the other incarcerated women.

When four male death row inmates are temporarily transferred to the facility, they overpower the guards and take over. The male convicts rape, mutilate, and torture the female inmates, forcing Emanuelle into action. It’s up to her and her fellow inmates to take control of the prison “” and their very lives.

Women’s Prison Massacre is a film that works better as a series of sadistic vignettes than coherent narrative. There are notable moments of extreme violence in Mattei’s film – a sadistic game of Russian roulette, a scene in which a woman hides a razor blade in her vagina before enticing a male convict to have sex with her – but that’s about it.

The last film in the popular Black Emanuelle series, Women’s Prison Massacre has achieved cult status strictly for its cheesy dialogue and over-the-top, cartoonish violence. Interestingly enough, Mattei’s film was partially financed by a French Pantyhose company, which is why – despite catfights and prison rape – the female convicts rarely remove their hosiery.

Director Bruno Mattei made a career out of exploitation, from women in prison to cannibals to full-on nunsploitation. Best known for 1984’s Rats: Night of Terror, Mattei’s filmography contains a cornucopia of absurd film titles, including SS Girls, Porno Holocaust, and Shocking Dark. Shocking Dark is notable because of its alternate titles: Terminator 2, Contaminator, Alienators, Return of the Exterminator. You’ve got to love those Italian rip-off titles!

Unfortunately, Women’s Prison Massacre isn’t absurd enough to leave a lasting mark in the cult film landscape. Mattei’s film fails to live up to the high watermark of other women in prison films like Switchblade Sisters, The Big Doll House, Women in Cages, and Chained Heat. Still, for those tiptoeing into the behind-bars world of exploitation, Massacre serves as a suitable introduction.

Women’s Prison Massacre comes to Blu-ray thanks to Scream Factory, Shout! Factory’s sub-division of forgotten horror and science-fiction films. As with most Scream Factory releases, this Blu-ray looks great, with solid grain and natural colors. With a 1080p transfer in 1.85:1 and a DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track, this is solid high-definition release for a so-so entry in the women in prison subgenre.
