Wolverine Old Man Logan

For a long time, there has been speculation that Wolverine 3 would have an R rating, following the huge box office success of Deadpool. There were also rumors that the final installment of the Wolverine franchise starring Hugh Jackman would be inspired by the “Old Man Logan” comic book storyline. Of course seeing how The Wolverine Uncut Edition was much more well-received than its theatrical cut may have had something to do with that decision as well.

Now with the X-Men: Apocalypse press tour underway, we are learning more about the future of the X-Men film franchise. In a recent interview, producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that the film will be Rated-R and hinted that the film’s plot will be inspired by “Old Man Logan” storyline. More on the story below.

In an interview with Collider, Kinberg said the following:

I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a Western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.

It’s not clear as to what context “was” being used. Does it mean that Stewart is a part of the film or does it mean he is no longer in consideration? We’ll just have to wait and see as more information is released. But one thing is for sure, it will be rated R and it will be violent. Kinberg also talks about how Wolverine 3 will have a “Western” tone and that it will be very cool and different, and added that Wolverine will be “very radical, bold, different” than he was in previous films.

Unlike The Wolverine, Wolverine 3 will not have alternate takes or shots diluted for a PG-13 audience. The film will have our favorite Adamantium-clawed mutant in some very bloody action and have some choice language for a film that befits an R-rating. I mean, his claws aren’t meant to tickle or scratch. They stab and slice. So it will be great to see the Wolverine be able to fight the way he was meant to fight and use the kind of language that is more of a reflection of the character and not something meant for a younger audience.

For those who are unfamiliar with the story, “Old Man Logan” finds Wolverine living peacefully in a dystopian future only to be drawn back into battle after accepting a job to deliver a package on the opposite side of the country. While the storyline does use key characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe like Red Skull, Hawkeye, and Hulk, Mark Millar has said that the story can still work for film as long as they change or switch characters. In this case, new and original characters never before seen in the comics are being created for the film.

Eriq Lasalle recently joined Jackman, along with fellow co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, and Stephen Merchant.

Directed by James Mangold, the untitled Wolverine 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on March 3, 2017.
