‘The Magnificent Seven’ Director Antoine Fuqua In Talks For ‘Scarface’ Remake

Al Pacino in Scarface (1983)

On September 23rd, the remake of the 1960 western The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, and more will be released in theaters.

The movie is directed by Antoine Fuqua, who is wasting no time in finding another similar project to take on. According to reports Fuqua has entered into negotiations to direct the long in development remake of Scarface for Universal Pictures.

Much like The Magnificent Seven, the Scarface remake has been in the works for quite a while now. They’re both also basically remakes of other remakes, with the original Magnificent Seven being a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai and 1983’s Scarface starring Al Pacino being a remake of Howard Hawks’ 1932 Scarface.

Universal has been trying to avoid calling the movie a “remake” because they know it’s not popular. But hey, it is what it is. If it’s done well, people won’t care.

As with the previous two iterations, Universal will be using the same basic formula:

An outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition.

But to make sure it’s as far from being a remake as possible, the movie will have its own unique spin. All we know for now is that it will be set this time around in contemporary Los Angeles.

The most recent draft of the screenplay was written by Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton, Ghost in the Shell), with Paul Attanasio (Quiz Show, Donnie Brasco) and David Ayer (director of Suicide Squad, Fury) penning previous drafts. Ayer also wrote the screenplay for 2001’s Training Day, which was directed by Fuqua.

Fuqua’s other previous credits include Tears of the Sun, King Arthur (2004), Shooter, Brooklyn’s Finest, Olympus Has Fallen, The Equalizer, and Southpaw.
