The marketing campaign for Logan, the third installment of Wolverine’s X-Men spinoff franchise starring Hugh Jackman as the title character, has kicked off in a very interesting way. After the release of the teaser poster, we’ve been getting little hints about the film via its Instagram page. That is where we learned Boyd Holbrookwill play Pierce, a notable X-Men villain. In the comics, Pierce has ties to two very powerful groups, one as a member of the Hellfire Club and the other as the leader of the Reavers. The image of Holbrook with sunglasses gave us an idea of how desolate the future really is. But there were no Reavers. Until now.
A new image posted gives us our first look at the Reavers, who may or may not resemble their comic book counterparts. Check out the image below.
In the comics, the Reavers are a band of cyborg thieves who are dedicated to killing Wolverine. Some of its most notable members are Lady Deathstrike, Pretty Boy, Skullbuster, and Bonebreaker. However, Donald Pierce assumed the leadership role, taking vengeance on the X-Men in particular and eliminating mutants in general. He also combined the forces of some other members of the Hellfire Club into the Reavers group.
Again, it’s not clear if director James Mangold will go in this direction, but don’t be surprised if you were to see any changes from the comics to the film. This unnamed Reaver doesn’t look like he has a cybernetic hand, but a fleshy arm with tattoos. The fact that he’s pointing some heavy artillery at an unknown target seems to indicate that Mangold will at least keep the group as a mercenary force. Whether or not this means Lady Deathstrike will appear remains to be seen. Remember, the X-Men timeline was thrown for a loop after the events of Days of Future Past, so any change to characters are possible. In the comics, Lady Deathstrike sought revenge on Wolverine by taking his adamantium, for which the bonding process theory belonged to her father.
Here’s what we know: Logan will take place during a time where the mutant population has dwindled, and Logan’s powers are at a decline to a point where he has to drink booze to numb the pain. Professor X’s (Patrick Stewart) powers are also not working properly as he is barely able to remember who Wolverine is. Caliban (Stephen Merchant) is a mutant who is able to sense other mutants but also has the ability to channel the emotions of those around him to enhance his strength. Based on photos of the character sporting a cowboy hat and a bandana, Logan seems to be influenced by westerns. Here’s a photo from Merchant’s Instagram page just to give you an example:
