Written by Ed Naha (Troll, Dolls) and directed by David K. Irving (Good-bye Cruel World), C.H.U.D II: Bud The Chud is a sequel to 1984’s C.H.U.D., Douglas Cheek’s cult flick about “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers.”
If you’re worried you won’t be able to follow the complex storyline of C.H.U.D II: Bud The Chud without watching the original first, rest easy – the 1989 direct-to-VHS sequel has little to do with its predecessor. Doctor Berlin (Priscilla Pointer, of Carrie and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors) and Colonel Masters (Robert Vaughn) are experimenting with enzymes taken from the sewer-dwelling creatures from C.H.U.D. to turn flesh-and-blood soldiers into unstoppable killing machines.
When the military is forced to shut down operations, Masters orders the last C.H.U.D., Bud (Gerrit Graham, Phantom of the Paradise), be frozen and shipped off to a Center for Disease Control outpost in the small town of Winterhaven. Enter Kevin (Bill Calvert), Steve (Brian Robbins), and Katie (Tricia Leigh Fisher), high school kids who accidentally awaken him when they mistake him as a cadaver and try to steal him for their biology class.
The bumbling, braindead Bud goes on a killing spree, turning his victims into mindless cannibals who, in fact, do not dwell underground. They’re more like zombies, shuffling around the streets of suburbia in search of food. Now the leader of a C.H.U.D. army, Bud heads over to the high school Halloween dance for a smorgasbord of teenaged brains. There he finds Kevin, Steve, and Katie, armed with fire extinguishers, ready to battle the Cannibalistic Humanoid Aboveground Dwellers and save their small town from becoming “Chudified.”
C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud comes to limited edition Blu-ray courtesy of the Vestron Video Collector’s Series, Lionsgate’s label dedicated to resurrecting forgotten titles from the home video company’s catalog. Bud the Chud is without question a terrible, terrible movie, but it’s also completely harmless. If you’re the type who finds enjoyment in cheesy direct-to-video horror flicks from the ’80s, you’ll no doubt find something to appreciate in David K. Irving’s film, whether it’s Robert Vaughn’s bonkers performance or Nicholas Pike’s rad theme song. It’s definitely worth a look if you’ve been searching for a really bad movie to watch while you eat pizza in the basement with your friends.
C.H.U.D II: Bud The Chud (Vestron Video Collector’s Series) features a 1080p high definition transfer (16×9 Widescreen 1.85:1) from the original film elements. The original 2.0 Stereo Audio is included, as well as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby Audio. There’s also all-new special features, including an audio commentary with director David Irving and interviews with actor Gerrit Graham, actress Tricia Leigh Fisher, and special effects artist Allan Apone, and is available at Amazon.
