It has been a while since we last saw anything from Wes Anderson, who directed 2014’s summer darling sleeper hit The Grand Budapest Hotel. But fans will not have to wait any longer for his return, even though it is a brief one. Before Anderson can get to work on his next stop-motion animation project, the cult filmmaker who has been behind films like Moonrise Kingdom, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Darjeeling Limited teamed up with H&M for a festive holiday ad, that centers around a couple of train conductors and passengers aboard a train hurtling towards an unknown destination during a snowstorm.
Check out the ad below.
True to his filmmaking style, the H&M ad has a lot of flat space camera movement with the camera panning from one side to the other seamlessly. The ad sees a train conductor (played by Adrian Brody) telling its passengers that it will be arriving into the station 11 1/2 hours late, and will not be there in time for Christmas. Of course, this disappoints some of its younger passengers. So Brody, with the help of another train conductor, work together to save Christmas.
Though it is an H&M ad, the ad feels a lot like a short that fills the Anderson void some fans have felt. The style, clothing, and tone all feel whimsical, while also remaining just a bit jolly, and tips its hat to the company it is promoting.
It’s great to see that even though Anderson directed an ad for a company as big as H&M, he didn’t have to sacrifice his filmmaking style. While it is hardly enough to hold us over until his next film, it nice to see that he can extend his body of work to more than just movies. And overall, the ad is fun and will put anyone, even a Scrooge, into the holiday spirit.
