It’s been about three and a half years now since we last saw a new episode of Futurama, and there’s no signs of Comedy Central or Netflix or anyone else bringing it back to life anytime soon.
But all is not lost. There are other ways to get your fix on the way. A new mobile game titled Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow has been announced, and it will feature the original voice cast and writers returning to help to make it the best experience we could hope for short of actually getting new episodes.
The game is being made by JamCity, who looks for properties with large fan followings already in place such as with two they’ve already made, Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff and Avengers Academy. Co-founder Josh Yguado says of the new game:
“Fans can’t get Futurama on TV. This is the place to continue the story and interact with your favorite characters.”
David X. Cohen, who co-created Futurama with Matt Groening, says that the game will look to re-create the Futurama universe. In it, you’ll send the Planet Express crew on missions to various planets where they’ll meet and do battle with some familiar faces.
The game will be updated with new content each week, penned by the show’s writing staff, which JamCity says will equate to seasons worth of new Futurama goodness. One of the reasons this is possible is because much less animating will need to be done than the show required.
Some of the stars returning to voice their characters include the big three: Billy West, who voices Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Zoidberg, and more characters; Katey Sagal, who voices Leela; and John DiMaggio, who voices Bender.
Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow is planned for a release sometime this summer. Like most mobile games, the game will be free to play with paid content available to those who want it.
