It’s already been three years now since The Elder Scrolls Online was initially launched. In the middle of celebrating the occasion, publisher Bethesda Softworks and developer ZeniMax Online Studios want to give those who have yet to discover the MMO set in Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls universe a chance to escape to that world for an entire week.
Starting today, players on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac can download and play the entire base game for free. And those who take them up on the offer can keep playing it until one week from today, April 18th.

The event starts on April 11, 2017 at 10:00 am EDT on PlayStation®4, Xbox One, and Steam (PC/Mac) and ends on April 18, 2017, at 10:00 am EDT.
– Xbox Live Gold membership required to play on Xbox One.
When the event starts, you can download and play The Elder Scrolls Online on your platform here (if the Free Play version is not yet available for your platform, check back again later):
– Xbox One
You’ll have access to the full The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited base game, not including DLC game pack areas.
Upon account creation, you will receive 500 crowns to spend in the in-game Crown Store. Perfect for Crown Crates, unique outfits, XP boosts, and more!
Any characters you create, Crown Packs or Crown Store items you purchase, and progress you make during the Free Play event will carry over if you decide to purchase the game.
If you participated in any previous Free Play events, any characters, progress, Crown Packs and Crown Store items you acquired during that time will still be available to play as well!
– Steam (PC/Mac)
On top of all that, we’re still right in the middle of our three-year anniversary event, granting you an item that provides an XP boost!
Giving people a full week to play is a smart move on their part. I’ve always thought that it takes a bit of time to really get into the game, to learn how things work, see multiple areas, and try various things in order to find what you enjoy doing most and what you’re not as fond of.
For me personally, my favorite part of The Elder Scrolls Online is simply hanging out in it. Traveling around to different locations, exploring, people watching, listening to the music. I enjoy doing the quests and progressing through the story as well, but those things bring the most happiness.
Nothing will ever replace the joy of a solo adventure in one of Bethesda’s main games in the series, of course, and I’ll always be excitedly awaiting the arrival of Skyrim‘s follow-up. But it’s still great to have an always growing and evolving game similar enough to the solo titles which I can run off to if an escape from the real world is needed.
I’ve put a lot of time into the game, and enjoyed every minute of it. Unfortunately I don’t get to play as much as I’d like to these days—mainly due to the ever-growing pile of other games I want to start or need to complete—but I still drop in from time to time just to hang out in that world of Tamriel I love so very much. Hopefully a few new fans will find similar joy this week.
