The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Netflix has announced that they are developing The Witcher, a new series based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski‘s fantasy books and stories.

The stories were previously turned into the hit video game series of the same name by developer CD Projekt RED, consisting of 2007’s The Witcher, 2011’s The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, and 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Sapkowski’s series includes eight novels and some short stories. Witchers, through training and genetic modification from a young age, acquire superhuman abilities, enabling them to become great monster hunters. The primary protagonist of the stories is the witcher Geralt of Rivia, also known as the White Wolf.

Sapkowski will be a creative consultant on The Witcher, and said this about the announcement:

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

Netflix’s vice president of international series Erik Barmack said:

“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar. We couldn’t be more excited about bringing The Witcher saga to Netflix members around the world.”

Sean Daniel and Jason Brown (The Expanse) of the Sean Daniel Company are executive producing the series along with Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko (The Fallen Art) of Polish production and visual effects company Platige Image.

Daniel and Brown also released a statement, saying:

“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

And finally, Baginski and Sawko said:

“There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”

It’s not yet known when we might see The Witcher arrive on Netflix, or who will star in the series.

It’s not the first time the books have gotten a live-action adaptation. A movie and miniseries were made in 2001 and 2002 starring Polish actor Michal Zebrowski, seen below.
