Ben Mendelsohn is the go to actor if you are looking for someone to play a villain. After delivering a terrific performance as Orson Krennic in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the actor may land another villainous role in another blockbuster property.
According to various reports, Mendelsohn is in talks to play an unknown villain in Captain Marvel. The film would pit him opposite Brie Larson, who is playing the title role. More on the story below.
Variety says Mendelsohn is currently in talks for the role, so there is no guarantee he will sign on. But given who is directing there is a chance he could be on board for the film. That’s because he would be reuniting with his Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
While the report doesn’t say who Mendelsohn would be playing, there is already speculation that he would take on the role of a Skrull leader. It has already been confirmed that the Skrulls would be a major villainous force in the film. So it would seem to make a lot of sense that Mendelsohn would be playing the leader of the alien race.
The actor can next be seen in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One. Other upcoming roles include Sheriff Nottingham in Robin Hood: Origins and King George VI in The Darkest Hour. He also had roles in The Dark Knight Rises and The Place Beyond the Pines.
The report says the two directors had Mendelsohn in mind for the role when they were working on the script. Once they had met, Mendelsohn agreed to be a part of it. While this isn’t exactly a confirmation, it is as close as we will get for the time being.
The film, which will take place in the ’90s, sees Air Force pilot Carol Danvers (Larson) become the hero known as Captain Marvel, who got her powers when her DNA is fused with that of the Kree. Her powers include superhuman strength, speed, and stamina, as well as flight, energy projection, and durability. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury, who will apparently have both eyes in the film.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet wrote the most recent script, with Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman penning previous drafts.
Captain Marvel is set to bow on March 8, 2019.
