When someone mentions the name Thor these days, most folks immediately start thinking of a certain comic book superhero that has been in a few movies lately. If I were to speak the word Ragnarok, then those same people would think I speak of the newest film in that hero’s franchise. But trust me, Ragnarok: Last God Standing Vol. 1 is so much more than that.

In this story, Ragnarok is a thing of the past. Centuries before the start of our tale, the gods and their foes have waged their war across the nine realms and have managed to mostly kill one another off. Entire civilizations have fallen, leaving the survivors to suffer and do anything to survive. Powers still exist but they are far less prominent than before the end times.

Our story is that of The Stone God, once named Thor, who carries his enchanted hammer Mjolnir. His quest is a simple one, to find those responsible for the demise of his family. Again and again, however, his path crosses others who would see him harmed. His response, is one of finality. Appearing as one of the undead, he nonetheless defends humanity and any mortals in need. For some habits die harder than the gods themselves.

Walter Simonson is both author and artist for this wondrous graphic novel. His knowledge of mythology and history mixes well with his imagination to create an apocalyptic world that struggles to sustain life amidst the horrors that have taken root after the destruction of Yggdrasil. The story is well told and develops at an acceptable pace, alerting the reader to just enough to keep it intriguing and exciting. Any fan of Norse mythos will want this first volume. The only complaint I have is that I have to wait for the next graphic novel! But seriously, this one is a keeper.

Legendary creator Walter Simonson returns to Norse mythology with this epic tale. Ragnarök”¦ the Twilight of the God”¦ the destruction of the Nine Worlds. And now, three hundred years later, the birth of vengeance. Collects issues #1–6.
