Ready Player One

In the two previously released Ready Player One trailers, you may have noticed several Easter eggs giving nods to films, animes, games, and so much more. And since Steven Spielberg is directing this adaptation of Ernest Cline‘s novel, it is safe to say that the film will have plenty of Easter Eggs from Spielberg films. But this adaptation would not be possible without the book, which draws much of its inspiration from Spielberg films.

Now Warner Bros. has released a brand new featurette that honors Spielberg’s works and acknowledges that the book and its film adaptation would not be at all possible without him. Check it out below.

The featurette below is clearly just a tribute to Spielberg’s works. I say that broad statement because it contains some films that Spielberg did not direct. While that may be the case, there’s no doubt that his influence and input plays a huge role in the inspiration for Ready Player One. In fact, this may be one of the more imaginative Spielberg films we have seen in a while, since he has directed more stimulating material.

In the featurette, we hear Spielberg talk about what drew him to direct Ready Player One, and it wasn’t just because the novel pays homage to him. “I suddenly saw a future that Ernest Cline, the writer of the book, envisioned. It wasn’t that far away from what I think is going to happen, someday,” said Spielberg. The director says that the themes explored is a great way to escape reality via virtual reality, a technology the director calls “a super drug.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name. The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

The film stars Tye Sheridan, Mark Rylance, Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, and Hannah John-Kamen. Cline, Zak Penn, and Eric Eason penned the script.

Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 30, 2018.
