Ready Player One already promises to be one of the most entertaining films of the year. The Steven Spielberg-directed adaptation of the Ernest Cline novel of the same name features an overwhelming amount of pop culture references that are all woven into a story about digital escapism and a revolution. But for those who may not be familiar with the novel, it’s hard to imagine what a world where “the limits of reality are your own imagination” would look like.
However, the latest trailer gives us another look at that world, while also squeezing in some new footage and a few more pop culture references. Check it out below.
At this point, I am just interested in seeing what the movie is. Adding in a few more Easter Eggs might take away from the experience of watching the film just for the joy of watching it. But the film’s premise is built around the idea that these characters escape into a world where they can interact with anime, video game, movie, and TV characters. That obviously gives enough room to build an exciting world, so I hope that Spielberg’s adaptation can find a way to not let these Easter eggs be a distraction and work them in organically into the story.
The film stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,†based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name, which has become a worldwide phenomenon. The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 29, 2018.
