The 90th Annual Academy Awards ceremony was broadcasted live on ABC on Sunday night, March 4, 2018, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, CA, with Jimmy Kimmel returning as host.
Check out the list of all the winners from Oscars 2018.
Below are a several highlights from this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, some of which have accompanying videos.
I just want to mention that it wouldn’t an Oscar viewing if I didn’t think about my father, who I lost in summer 2016. My dad loved movies, loved talking about movies, and especially would make a point of seeing the nominated films and talking about them with me over dinners throughout the year. Then we’d have our post-Oscars discussion on who and what deserved to win. Thinking of you tonight Daddy, I know you would have loved Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape Of Water, which was my favorite movie of 2017.
The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements were in full-force for the Oscars, as they have been at other awards this season. Host Jimmy Kimmel addressed it several times in his opening monologue, as did plenty of the winners and presenters. Later on, TimesUp leaders Annabella Sciorra, Ashley Judd, and Salma Hayek, introduced a video with interviews with groundbreaking people in the industry.
Rita Moreno, who’s a total badass, wore the same dress this year as she did to the Oscars in 1962 when she won Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story. (She talked to E Online! about the dress.)
Calling back to last year’s flub with Best Picture Moonlight…
Helen Mirren acts as Price Is Right-type spokesmodel during Kimmel’s monologue.
Zaphod Beeblebrox wins Best Supporting Actor!!!
Eva Marie Saint’s standing ovation.
A clip from 1954’s On The Waterfront preceded the introduction to Eva Marie Saint, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role. The 93-year-old received a standing ovation from her peers. All of this made me teary eyed because not only is still a legendary actress, but On The Waterfront was a movie I watched with my paternal grandfather all the time when I was growing up. In regards to the standing ovation, Saint says it meant a lot, especially having lost her husband of 65 years (director/producer Jeffrey Hayden) last year, and that it was so loud, she knows he heard it. So touching. The actress looks amazing. This was truly a wonderful moment.
Performance of “Remember Me” from Disney’s Coco.
I loved Disney’s Coco so much. And it really touched me even more so because I had lost my father the year before. And one thing I always feel is that we need to remember the people we’ve lost and keep them alive in our hearts and memories. So, I was pretty much in tears through the performance for the nominated song from Coco “Remember Me.” Remembering you tonight and always, Daddy.
Later in the broadcast, Coco won for Best Animated Feature, and then later Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won for Best Original Song for “Remember Me”!!!! Upon accepting Best Song, Anderson-Lopez says they were going to try to win the jet ski, but they’re from Brooklyn– yes, Brooklyn representing!!!
BB-8 Presents….
So, I was all hopped up to see one of my first loves Mark Hamill present, along with his co-stars of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but then my love BB-8 rolled out with them!!!
They presented 2 awards, one for Best Animated Feature to Disney’s Coco (yay!!), and another to Dear Basketball for Best Animated Short.
Kobe Claps Back…
So yeah, that happened.
On top of that, when accepting his award, Oscar-winner Kobe Bryant said, “As basketball players, we’re really supposed to shut up and dribble…,” a clapback at FOX News anchor Laura Ingraham, who said this very condescending statement about Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James “talking politics.”
The stars surprise the next door movie theater audience.
Last year, the ceremony saw a tour group unsuspectingly brought right into the live broadcast. This year, Kimmel joined several stars — Mark Hamill, Ansel Elgort, Guillermo del Toro, Lupita Nyong’o, Armie Hammer, Gal Gadot, Lin-Manuel Miranda, , Margot Robbie, Emily Blunt, led by Kimmel’s sidekick Guillermo — to the building next door to a movie theater where they surprised its unsuspecting audience with Red Vines, Junior Mints, and hot dogs they shot out of hot dog cannons.
Maya Rudolph and Tiffany Haddish liven up the joint…
These two incredibly talented comedic actresses presented the awards for the lesser-known categories “Best Documentary Short” and “Best Live-Action Short” and oh wow did they really liven up the joint! The buzz on Twitter immediately afterwards was that these two ladies should host the Oscars next year, and I agree!
Jordan Peele wins Best Original Screenplay for Get Out.
What a great moment! This is a step forward for minority filmmakers, as well as for the horror film genre. I love that a comedic actor wrote and directed a horror film with spot-on social commentary, and people not only took notice, but saw something special in it.
Eddie Vedder Performs Tom Petty For “In Memoriam” Segment
Frances McDormand Gets All The Female Nominees To Stand With Her
During her acceptance speech for winning the Oscar for Best Actress for Three Billboards, Frances McDormand asked ALL of the female nominees from ALL categories to stand up with her, getting Meryl Streep to lead (“If you do it, they’ll all do it.) She then said to take a look at all these women and then call them in a few days to hear their pitches for new projects. A powerful moment.
Guillermo del Toro wins Best Director For The Shape of Water
These tweets of mine say it all…
The Shape Of Water Wins Best Picture!!!
And at the very end of the night, my favorite picture of the year, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape Of Water won BEST PICTURE.
Let’s go back to my tweets…
Del Toro smartly checked the envelope to make sure his film actually won, after last year’s envelopegate fiasco…
What a night!!!
