Robert Downey Jr. is no stranger to starring in ensemble films. He’s done it for the better part of ten years with Marvel Studios. But his tenure with the superhero studio is coming to an end, and now that he will not have to put the Iron Man suit on anymore, he can look forward to working on other projects like The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.
The actor has just revealed his co-stars for the film and the animals they will be voicing. There is a wide range of talent from Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water), John Cena (Ferdinand), Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Ralph Fiennes (In Bruges), Emma Thompson (Beauty and the Beast), Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), and so much more have joined the cast. Check out the full list below.
Downey Jr. posted the full cast list on his Twitter along with the respective animal roles they will be playing:
Just in case you cannot read the tweet, here’s who will be playing who. Emma Thompson will play a parrot named Polynesia; Rami Malek will voice a gorilla named Chee-Chee; Craig Robinson will voice a mouse named Fleming; Carmen Ejogo voices a lioness named Regine; Tom Holland will voice a dog named Jip; Octavia Spencer will voice a a duck named Dab-Dab; Marion Cotillard voices a fox named Tutu; Ralph Fiennes will voice a tiger named Barry; Kumail Nanjiani will voice an ostrich named Plimpton; John Cena will voice Yoshi the polar bear; Selena Gomez voices Bitsy the giraffe; and finally Frances De La Tour plays a character named Ginko-Who-Soars – not entirely sure what that is but it should be fun to see what or who it is.
Universal is pinning their hopes on The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle becoming a success so they can turn it into a franchise. And it’s not as though they don’t have enough to work with. The film is based on the Hugh Lofting novels of the same name. In fact, Lofting wrote a series of follow-ups, which inspired two different film adaptations. The first starring Rex Harrison and the other starring Eddie Murphy.
The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle will be written and directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana).
Universal has scheduled the film for an April 12, 2019 release.
