A PG-13 Deadpool 2 may sound like a quick cash grab, but star Ryan Reynolds assures that it’s being made for very good reasons. And after all of the hype building up to its release, we now have our first look at Once Upon A Deadpool, starring Reynolds reading to a much older Fred Savage who is reprising his character from The Princess Bride. What happens next will have Deadpool question if his movies are truly Marvel movies. Check out the trailer here below.
“It’s like if the Beatles were produced by Nickelback. It’s music, but it sucks,” says Savage, who is being forcefully restrained with duct tape by Deadpool, who doesn’t take too kindly to Savage’s remark.
Let’s face it, this thought applies to all of the Fox-owned Marvel properties. Sure, Deadpool is the one IP that can acknowledge the confusion in hilarious ways, which makes for some incredibly funny jokes. But things will change when Disney starts to reclaim those Marvel properties Fox owned.
Now, it doesn’t look like much has changed, other than toning things down for a PG-13 friendly audience. The addition of Deadpool reading to Savage is also the newest addition to the sequel.
Reynolds admits he wouldn’t have moved forward with this version unless some proceeds went to charity. And a percentage will go to FuckCancer, a charity organization aimed to cure cancer. So $1 of every ticket sold will go to it. However, to make sure the organization is also family-friendly, it’s renamed Fudge Cancer here. Because who doesn’t like Fudge.
Here’s what Reynolds had to say about Once Upon A Deadpool:
“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006. I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said “˜Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining”¦”
While it is for a good cause, it will be interesting to see how fans will react to it. Also, will any of them show up? Some of them may have already seen the film. Then there is the fact that an uncut version was released on Blu-ray. So is a PG-13 version really something people want, especially when they already know the jokes? Sure, the addition of Savage could be nice, so that could be a draw. But, in the end all we are getting is a watered-down Deadpool 2. So it just depends whether or not the mature fans will go. But if you are looking for a film to take your kids to, maybe this will be it.
Once Upon a Deadpool will play in theaters from December 12, 2018 till Christmas Eve 2018.
