Mandy star Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in Color Out of Space, an upcoming adaptation of the 1927 H.P. Lovecraft novella of the same name. Also starring is Joely Richardson, Tommy Chong, Elliot Knight, Julian Hilliard, and Q’Orianka Kilcher.
The movie will be directed by Richard Stanley, his first non-documentary feature in decades. It follows a family adjusting to a quieter life after moving to a New England farmhouse, when a meteorite strike leads to strange things happening.
Here’s a full description of Color Out of Space from Deadline:
The story centers on the Gardners, a family who moves to a remote New England farmstead to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. It seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color, and to the family’s horror they discover the alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches including them.
SpectreVision co-founders Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Josh C. Waller produce along with Lisa Whalen and executive producer Stacy Jorgensen, both also of SpectreVision. ACE Pictures is financing the project, with ACE’s Timur Bekbosunov, Johnny Chang, Emma Lee, and Peter Wong executive producing.
Of the announcement, Daniel Noah had this to say:
“Lovecraft is the dark father of modern horror, and we have been searching for an adaptation that captures the true scope of his cosmic dread for years. Richard Stanley — a wizard in his own right — will at long last bring Lovecraft’s humbling power to the screen unfiltered.â€
Color Out of Space re-teams Cage with SpectreVision, which produced last year’s Mandy.
Stanley directed Hardware in 1990 and Dust Devil in 1992 before moving onto a much bigger project, an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau, which unfortunately did not go well at all.
Since then he’s directed numerous shorts and documentaries. He also directed a segment of the 2011 horror anthology The Theatre Bizarre, and co-wrote the screenplay for 2017’s Replace.
No release window for Color Out of Space has been announced yet, though filming is expected to begin next month.
