Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges is teasing the return of one of his most popular characters.
The actor has shared a video indicating that his character from the 1998 Coen Brothers hit The Big Lebowski, The Dude, will be returning soon. The big question is, in what? Is there a surprise sequel on the way, or will it be something else?
Click on over to the other side to check out the video.
Now, before you get your hopes up too high, this actually being The Big Lebowski 2: The Dude Returns or anything like that is extremely unlikely, sadly.
At the end of the video a date is shown revealing when we’ll learn more: February 3, 2019. This also happens to be the date that the New England Patriots will be playing the Los Angeles Rams in this year’s Super Bowl. So…the most obvious answer is that we’re looking at some kind of commercial here.
Another small clue is at the very bottom of the end of the video, where it says “@2019 Universal City Studios LLC. All Rights Reserved.” Searching doesn’t result in a whole lot of info on Universal City Studios, but Bloomberg does confirm that it’s a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, as you probably suspected it might be. They also say that it’s an entertainment company which “produces and distributes motion pictures and television programs, as well as movies, shows, and mini-series.”
Universal didn’t distribute The Big Lebowski when it was originally released—that was Gramercy Pictures—but Universal Home Entertainment has released some home video versions of the film.
So who knows! We’ve seen some strange and unexpected things happen over the years. It will be interesting to see exactly what this turns out to be.
And hey, even if it is just a commercial, I’m sure fans of The Big Lebowski will be happy to hang out with The Dude for a few more moments.
