Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham may be friends off and on the set, but when the cameras are rolling for a Fast and Furious film, their respective characters are anything but. Now, the franchise is going in a new direction by launching a brand new spinoff, with the first being called Fast And Furious Presents: Hobbs And Shaw. This can only make things more complicated for the two titular characters as they are now forced to “perform outside of the system” to capture a dangerous cybernetically enhanced anarchist named Brixton (Idris Elba). Check out the full trailer for the latest spinoff here below.
What once started out as a film about race cars has evolved into bank heists and then changed into international espionage. Now the spinoff looks like it will be continuing in that direction. Hobbs (Johnson), a lawman who describes “himself as a cold can of whoop ass” who always gets his guy, and Shaw (Statham), a rogue MI6 agent who describes himself as a champagne problem who doesn’t work well with others, are now forced to work together, with the aid of another fearless rogue MI6 agent (Vanessa Kirby), to capture Brixton, whose insidious bio-threat could alter humanity forever.
So it looks like they won’t be needing help from The Family – still confused as to how this franchise could be so accepting of a guy who killed one of the coolest characters in the franchise. Where’s the justice for Han?
But clearly, Hobbs and Shaw’s personalities and methods are different, making them the perfect pair for this particular mission. One is a hard muscle toned big man who stops at nothing to get the job done, and the other is a person who does things with a bit more finesse and stealth.
The two even acknowledged how they are better than the other and also take their frustrations out on each other, during a mission. It makes for one hilarious action-packed odd couple.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
After eight films that have amassed almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone vehicle as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.
But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever – and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister – these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.
Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.
Directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2) from a script by longtime Fast & Furious narrative architect Chris Morgan, the film is produced by Morgan, Johnson, Statham and Hiram Garcia. The executive producers are Kelly McCormick, Dany Garcia, Steven Chasman, Ethan Smith and Ainsley Davies.
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw also stars Roman Reigns, Eiza Gonzalez, Eddie Marsan, Cliff Curtis, and Helen Mirren.
Directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2), Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw opens in theaters on August 2, 2019.
