Batman fans have waited for weeks wondering if Robert Pattinson or Nicholas Hoult would be playing the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves‘ upcoming film, The Batman. Now we have the answer. Reports confirm that Pattinson has won out. More on this news here below.
Deadline says that even though Pattinson, best known for his leading role in the Twilight films, was the frontrunner, Warner Bros. was torn between him and Hoult, who also gave a strong showing for the role. Apparently, both made such a strong case for themselves, that the studio wanted to get them on tape, so they had meetings with both actors.
Additionally, the report says that Reeves and Pattinson will be locked in for an entire trilogy. This trilogy would explore Batman’s formative years, which is why they were intent on getting a younger actor to play Batman. Deadline also says “this film will in no way carry on the work that Ben Affleck did as the older Batman in Batman vs Superman and Justice League.”
Hoult, who stars as Hank McCoy/Beast in the upcoming X-Men film Dark Phoenix, definitely has that boyishly good looks and inherent charm that comes with being Bruce Wayne, but there is just something about Pattinson that apparently makes him perfect for the role.
As we have previously reported, The Batman will focus more on what makes the character “The World’s Greatest Detective.” It will be a “very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale” and that it would see “Batman in his detective mode.” This is an aspect of the character that we haven’t seen much, if any, of the theatrical films, so it should be interesting to see how Reeves will put more of an emphasis on the Batman’s deductive skills than being Gotham City’s bare-knuckle brawling defender.
There are conflicting reports on whether production starts in late 2019 or early 2020. But we know that WB has scheduled the tentatively titled The Batman for a June 25, 2021 theatrical release.
