The Odd Couple Season 3 DVDThe Odd Couple
Season 3
Starring Jack Klugman, Tony Randall
Paramount Home Video
Available Jan. 22, 2008

Oscar! Oscar! Oscar!

Next to “Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!” no name resonated more among TV viewers of the 1970s than Tony Randall‘s Felix Unger complaining about Jack Klugman‘s slob Oscar Madison.

In fact, one can’t see Randall or Klugman in anything else without thinking of Felix and Oscar. Each time I watch Quincy, I wonder if there are any half-eaten sandwiches or cigar butts in the morgue.

Season Three of the Odd Couple is now out on DVD, and viewing it confirms that it is one of the funniest shows ever to appear on television. It seemed like a simple premise with stories that were sure to dry up after a season. But by season three, they are quite on a roll. For those of you who don’t know: New Yorkers Felix and Oscar became roommates when their wives divorced them (which was quite risqué on TV back in the day). A voiceover in the opening credits explains the premise of the show, questioning, “Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?” Why is this pondered? Because Unger is fastidiously neat and Madison the ultimate of slobs.

Pioneers of Television DVDPioneers Of Television
Documentary
PBS/Paramount Home Video
Available Jan. 29, 2008

It’s hard to believe that network television has been broadcasting for over 60 years, but it’s true.

Some of us remember when the majority of TV sets were black-and-white, when you had four or five channels max to choose from, and when you were the family member designated to get up and change the channel and mess with the antenna.

In our DirecTV, digital cable, and DVD world, we sometimes forget about the broadcast innovators that had to do TV live and blazed the trail that led us, for better or worse, to our television landscape today.

PBS recently broadcast the four-part series Pioneers Of Television and now, the entire series is available on DVD from Paramount Home Video.

This is a treasure trove of material for anyone who is interested in the medium, or anyone that just likes to reminisce about how TV was back in the good old days. And you know, they were pretty good back in the day.

There are four segments on this single disc DVD: Sitcoms, Late Night, Variety, and Game Shows.

A chance to show off cool CGI effects – check.

It can’t miss, right?

Not so fast, my friends.

This summer, a live-action movie version of Underdog was released, and now it’s on DVD. For those of us who fondly remember the cartoon series, it’s best to stay away from it if you want to preserve your fond memories.

Jason Lee (from TV’s My Name Is Earl) stars as the voice of Underdog and Shoeshine Boy as he gains superpowers and fights the evil Simon Barsinister (Peter Dinklage) and Cad (Patrick Warbruton) to save Sweet Polly Purebread (the voice of Amy Adams).

Mod Squad Season 1, Vol 1 DVDMod Squad
Season 1, Volume 1
Starring Michael Cole, Clarence Williams III, and Peggy Lipton
Paramount Home Entertainment
Available Dec. 18, 2007

There was trouble in the city. A new generation was breaking the old rules, and the man was trying to take advantage of them. So the fuzz came up with a plan — find three youngsters who could communicate with the hippies and help bust people who were messing with them. That way, the streets could be safe for everyone to let it all hang out.

Captain Adam Greer found Pete, a rich kid who found himself on the wrong side of the law; Linc, a product of the ghetto that got caught up in a race riot; and Julie, a sweet young thing who found herself homeless and trying anything to survive. Pete, Linc, and Julie became”¦the MOD SQUAD.

Starting in September of 1968, the young people of America sat down on Tuesdays at 7:30pm to see how these three hip youngsters fought the scum that were trying to take advantage of the kids on the street, and at the same time not be hassled by the man and his rules.

Music Review: Paul McCartney ‘Memory Almost Full’

Paul McCartney-Memory Almost Full CDPaul McCartney Memory Almost Full
Deluxe Edition CD/DVD
Hear Music
Available now

As great of an artist as he is, Paul McCartney is maddening. He has so much talent, but has wasted it on trifles, half-finished songs, ill-advised concepts, and general tomfoolery. As a solo artist, he’s given us some of the best albums in the history of rock-and-roll (Band On The Run) and also given us possibly the worst single ever (“My Love”).

So when he came out with Memory Almost Full, I was skeptical and cynical. McCartney’s later solo work has been decent, but nothing outstanding. He has become a “˜cult artist’ with a dedicated following, but not much traction outside his fan base. Yes, it’s a fan base that’s large enough to get this album to #3 on the charts, but that also says something. If the Billboard charts used Soundscan in the 1970s, a McCartney album would have been an unquestioned #1 on the charts on the week of its release. A #3 chart showing in a diluted market isn’t remarkable for someone of his stature.

My skepticism was more than cemented in my mind when he released his 2007 album Memory Almost Full. It was released on the Hear Music label, which is bankrolled by Starbucks.

A latte and Paul McCartney, barista!

But Memory Almost Full is a lot better than it deserved to be. McCartney is at ease, refreshed, relaxed, and using his considerable talents to form and complete a wide range of songs. He’s also exerted quality control as well, instead of filling an album with half-finished ideas (a plague on the McCartney and Wings work in the ’70s and ’80s) and running them together in a suite.
