Happy 75th Birthday, Bugs Bunny!

Bugs Bunny

Today is the 75th birthday of one of the great characters in the history of the animated genre, and in many ways, one of the greatest comedians of all time, the irrepressible Bugs Bunny, whose slick, extremely sharp and cunning personality, in which he employed a take-no-prisoners approach in the most side splitting ways to mow down his numerous adversaries in countless animated shorts, has endeared him to countless generations of fans to this very day.

Without question the top draw and flagship character of the myriad of many colorful ones to come from the legendary minds of Warner Brothers’ cartoon division (and realized by men like animation pioneers Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, Robert McKimson, and Chuck Jones), Bugs Bunny is a reflection of a Groucho Marx come to life. A vivid radical, break-all-the-rules, set new ones and smash those as well, and live every nanosecond as unorthodox as possible and on the fringes of the fringes of life, in which he did whatever it took to destroy his many adversaries (Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, etc). Bugs did it all for simply hitting the bullseye of achieving a level of self fun which stretched to the apex on a mission to simply eradicate boredom, and in which by doing so, he ultimately did the same for us as well.

Educational. Informative. Funny as hell. What? Yes, you read that correctly. Educational television was never like this. Comical Psychosomatic Medicine, or Anime de Wakaru Shinryonaika, is a joyous romp through the world of mental disorders, from erectile dysfunction and voyeurism to panic attacks and anxiety disorder. At the Yuu Mental Clinic, psychologist Ryou Shinnai and staff nurse Asuna Kangoshi tackle a variety of mental disorders. Asuna generally plays comic foil to Dr. Shinnai’s attempts to explain the various maladies, and of course, things get out of hand with puns on terms such as “cognitive impairment” (Asuna pictures her grandfather surrounded by girls trying to get him to admit he’s the father of their children) and “rem sleep” (Asuna imagines “harem sleep” with her granddad dreaming about being surrounded by a harem of girls).

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Big Hero 6 blasting off on Blu-ray. The Disney animated hit sees its Blu-ray home release and digital download premiere via Disney Movies Anywhere. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest production won over audiences and critics upon arriving in theatres, and those same individuals will be glad to hear that its home release does not disappoint either.

FILM

As I suggested in my original review of Big Hero 6, this action flick demonstrates the studio’s ability to seamlessly blend multiple genres in one. As much as this embodies an origins film that could lead to a sequel, the bustling gang of eccentric characters are crafted to make us fall in love with each of their personalities. This is a story about brothers, loss, new friendships, perseverance and the other touching factors you’re accustomed to from watching a great Disney movie. Additionally, laughs enter in each minute and a few tears are not far behind.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (3D)
Directed by Paul Tibbitt
Starring: Tom Kenny, Antonio Banderas, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Mr Lawrence, Carolyn Lawrence
Nickelodeon Pictures /Paramount Animation
Release Date: February 6, 2015

It’s been 16 years since the debut of SpongeBob Squarepants on TV, and a little over 10 years since the last movie. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long, but now but our favorite sponge who lives under the sea is back on the big screen, and as an added bonus, in glorious 3D.

In this sequel, all of your favorite citizens of Bikini Bottom are back, and things haven’t changed a bit. Mr. Krabs (voiced by Clancy Brown) is still making tons of money off a his Krabby Pattys, and Plankton (voiced by Mr Lawrence) is going all out to steal the secret recipe — it’s kind of the classic Roadrunner/Wil E Coyote scenario. It’s up to Spongebob Squarepants to once again help in making sure that Plankton doesn’t get the secret formula, but this time there is a third player in this heist, a pirate (Antonio Banderas), who has obtained a magical book that makes whatever he writes come true. It’s mass chaos and destruction in Bikini Bottom with no Krabby Pattys to be eaten, and so the unlikely pairing of Spongeboband Plankton must figure out a way to stop the formula from being stolen.

Disney In Depth: 25 Best Disney Animated Film Voice Artists (Part 1)
space
Brett Nachman   |  @   |

Disney In Depth banner

Voice artists often do not receive credit for their work on pieces of content that individuals cherish. These individuals define the characters as much as the animators’ designs, for the power of a suitable voice with much range can lead us to value the characters’ dreams and fears.

Over three editions of Disney In Depth in the coming months, I will highlight 25 actors and actresses whose voice performances for some of Disney’s most treasured animated film characters deserve kudos. For the sake of keeping the list “brief” and fair, voice artists for Pixar films are excluded from the list.

In no particular order, here part one of my 25 Best Disney Animated Film Voice Artists list.
