Fractured Hope
A Short Poem

By Elisabetta Jane Maria Allen

Coldness is insecurity enveloped in a state of uncertainty
In your heart there is knowing
knowing of a tomorrow that will never begin
Twisted in a time of technological domination
you seek to break free
From the harsh times of a fractured globe
manifested by a bastard that is humanity
For all the animal kingdom’s innocence
a day will prevail
When once again they will walk our planet’s terrain
and reclaim their home

Green ‘Almighty’
space
The EnviroGeek   |

Get On BoardEvan Almighty, which opens tomorrow, will have a green message attached to it. I am not referring to the green message that most films carry with them in their hope to make money. Nor will the movie’s posters be colored green or have the Geico Gecko telling you to go see the movie. This green message involves the environment.

Universal Pictures, with some help from its sponsors, is spending roughly $25 million on its Get On Board eco-awareness campaign, with a website created in conjunction with The Conservation Fund. The campaign will give audiences tips on how to help stop global warming while advertising the film at the same time.

The educational site includes the Almighty Forest, where you can plant a virtual and a real tree for a mere $5 donation. A cool little extra is that contributors will have their name included on the film’s DVD.

[UPDATE: Watch the behind-the-scenes clip here after the jump where the director discusses the film’s environmentally friendly filming practices.]

tribecalogoThe annual event opened in New York City with global warming theme.

The sixth annual Tribeca Film Festival opened last night with a gala in New York City hosted by former Vice President and environmentalist Al Gore, star of the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

The theme of this year’s festival is global warming and many of the films focus on the subject. One of the films was about the upcoming reunion of the legendary mock rock band Spinal Tap. Tap will be turning their amplifiers up to eleven on July 7th when they take part in the Live Earth concert at London’s Wembley Stadium. The Live Earth concert will deliver 24 hours of music from seven continents with the goal of bringing awareness to the dangers of global warming.

‘Planet Earth’ Final Episodes Tonight
space
Doomsday Mama   |

Planet Earth DVDEver since I bought a new 50-inch plasma TV, I’ve been looking for interesting nature programs to watch in high definition. I felt like I hit the jackpot when I began watching the Discovery Channel miniseries Planet Earth.

I’ve recorded every episode of the 11-part miniseries since it began airing on consecutive Sundays on March 25 and tonight I’m looking forward to the final two installments, Forests and Caves (8pm and 9pm ET/PT, respectively).

Actress/conservationist Sigourney Weaver narrates each hour-long episode of Planet Earth, which was put together by the makers of the nature history series Blue Earth.

I’ve never been so captivated by a program before. I can’t believe the filmmakers were able to capture such animal behaviors like the elusive snow leopard in the highest peaks of the Himalayas and the elephants on a months-long trek through the desert in search of water. The scenarios presented truly conveyed the emotions of the animals that humans aren’t often privy to.

DVD Review: An Inconvenient Truth

The EnviroGeek   |

An Inconvenient Truth

After losing the 2000 Presidential election, former Vice President Al Gore decided to rededicate his life to environmental issues. He traveled around the country presenting a multimedia slide show about climate change in an effort to bring awareness to the threat the planet is facing due to global warming.

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH is a compilation of Gore’s various presentations interspersed with personal events from the former politician’s life, which makes this documentary far from a dry list of data and statistics.

One does not need a scientist to understand what Gore is trying to convey. By using graphs, charts, and cartoons to illustrate certain points along with film footage and photos from around the globe, the message is clear: Global warming is real and it’s not a political issue, but a moral one that should not be ignored.

In a major show-don’t-tell moment, Gore uses “before and after” photos to prove his point that the Earth is adversely affected by climate change. Photos from years past of various places, such as Mount Kilimanjaro, were shown and then compared to recent pictures taken of the same exact locations using the same exact shot set-ups. The differences in the images are disturbing. Where the area was once ice-covered, there’s now only a hint of ice left to be seen.

The movie also touches on how global warming and its negative effects on the planet, such as throwing ecosystems off balance, are related to and effect all human activity. For example, the massive population boom in the last half century alone has stressed the Earth immensely, as has the demand for goods and factory orders, motor vehicle usage and the fossil fuels they guzzle, and increased deforestation and cultivation. A rapidly increasing human population that acts irresponsibly can only lead to doom (in a Lovecraftian sort of way).

As if trying to show the harmful affects climate change has on the planet wasn’t hard enough, Gore also has the challenge of proving that global warming actually exists. It appears that the skeptics are people like Jim Inhofe, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works who in 2002 received over $1 million from oil and gas companies. Fortunately for Gore, the evidence presented in the documentary has been confirmed as accurate by many climate scientists.

This film can easily be considered the scariest movie of the year. Fortunately, the frightening facts conveyed can lead to a positive change. No matter who you are — democrat/republican, man/woman, young/old, geek/non-geek, alien/humanoid, wookie/klingon — it’s not too late to reverse the negative affects of global warming. One need only acknowledge and understand AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH’s message of hope.

The environmentally-friendly packaged DVD hits stores tomorrow and a portion of the proceeds from its sales will go to the bipartisan climate effort, The Alliance for Climate Protection. Bonus materials on the DVD include a “making of” feature, a 30-minute introduction by Al Gore with updated information, a music video by Melissa Etheridge, who provide’s the film’s theme song, and commentary by the film’s director and producers.
