The first volume in a series that examines the craftsmanship of Disney artists responsible for the studio’s most recognizable and beloved products, They Drew As They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney’s Golden Age exhibits artwork catalogued and concealed. Until now. Released last year to much fanfare, the Didier Ghez book would nicely accompany any collection of Disney titles. It’s a perfect introduction to the painstakingly detailed works by four relatively unknown Disney artists for both the Disney nerd and the casual fan.

The Walt Disney Studios released three critically/viewer acclaimed films in 2016 that also were major financial hits – Moana still pending, but early signs look favorable; Finding Dory; and Zootopia.

Which of the three films, though, is the best? That’s like picking a favorite child, considering each movie’s unique strengths. To help determine the winner – in my book, at least – I have established a bunch of categories that apply to all of the films. Let the battle commence!

These images summon us to enter the Disney theme parks, prompting us to come up with fantastical ideas of what they hold in store. The poster art found at the entrances of Disney’s Magic Kingdom-style parks, as well as at Disney’s many other theme parks and destinations, are sometimes as fascinating to visually digest as the attractions are to experience. I know I felt that way as a child, always attracted to the visual majesty of such simple teasers. Apparently many others felt that way, too. As Disney Legend and renowned Imagineer Tony Baxter writes, that artwork remained in his mind in anticipation of entering Disneyland.

The 2012 book Poster Art of the Disney Parks possesses glossy, gorgeous visuals of tons of attractions (up to the release of the title), as well as some helpful commentary on their development and symbolism.
