Disney In Depth: Book Review: Maps Of The Disney Parks

Maps of the Disney Parks
Hardcover
Text By Kevin and Susan Neary
Maps Curated by Vanessa Hunt
Publisher: Disney Editions
Release date: October 18, 2016
How would we live without maps? They give us direction and purpose. Some lead us down new paths. Others familiarize us with common settings. The park maps we snatch upon entering any of the Disney theme parks accomplish just this. Even more, the meta atmosphere of Disney often means there are maps within maps. Thankfully a new book from Disney Editions titled Maps of the Disney Parks compiles both the dated and novel park maps, as well as maps featured within the park settings.
Duo Kevin and Susan Neary, along with Disney Imagineer Vanessa Hunt, have produced a wonderful publication of lush visuals galore that should nicely complement your edition of Hunt’s Poster Art of the Disney Parks.

Poster Art of the Disney Parks
Hardcover
Written by Daniel Handke and Vanessa Hunt
Disney Editions
Release Date: September 11, 2012
These images summon us to enter the Disney theme parks, prompting us to come up with fantastical ideas of what they hold in store. The poster art found at the entrances of Disney’s Magic Kingdom-style parks, as well as at Disney’s many other theme parks and destinations, are sometimes as fascinating to visually digest as the attractions are to experience. I know I felt that way as a child, always attracted to the visual majesty of such simple teasers. Apparently many others felt that way, too. As Disney Legend and renowned Imagineer Tony Baxter writes, that artwork remained in his mind in anticipation of entering Disneyland.
The 2012 book Poster Art of the Disney Parks possesses glossy, gorgeous visuals of tons of attractions (up to the release of the title), as well as some helpful commentary on their development and symbolism.

Disney In Depth: 50 Defining Moments Since Walt Disney Died (Part 1)

Fifty years ago this December, the world lost an entertainment icon who defined much of pop culture and Americana during the 20th century. The passing of Walt Disney, unexpected to many who were unaware of his lung cancer struggles, reverberated across the globe. Many seemed to wonder if the company that bore its founder’s name would continue in the same manner as it had for decades. Thankfully, the company has only grown and improved over the past 50 years.
This special three-part edition of Disney In Depth (the first released now in September; with the following two to debut in October and November, respectively) recognizes 50 defining moments in The Walt Disney Company’s history over these past 50 years (1967 – 2016). Let the (chronological) countdown begin!

Disney In Depth: Embracing More Marvel and Muppets In The Parks

Play the music and light the lights. The emergence of more Marvel and Muppets in the Disney theme parks is enough to make the future look very bright! Disney must balance so many properties these days that there is only enough slots during the yearly theatrical schedule to place movies. A few are reserved for “Disney proper,” whereas others must account for Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar.
Likewise, many of the Disney theme parks’ newest offerings are not “originals,” but rather come from preexisting brands. Two Disney brands gaining more exposure in the parks come from arenas that have been relatively absent in Disney parks: Marvel and the Muppets.

Disney In Depth: Examining Tom Staggs’ Unexpected Exit

This week Disney announced that Tom Staggs, chief operating officer of The Walt Disney Company, would be stepping down from his pivotal role. Disney sees major players change jobs within the organization all the time – sometimes even switching key positions entirely – but this exit is monumental.
Staggs had been viewed as the probable successor to CEO Bob Iger, to retire from the Mouse House’s top spot in 2018. What Staggs’ departure from Disney means for the company requires examination.

Disney In Depth: Epcot’s Evolution, A One-Year Thesis Project

Twelve months in the making and one unforgettable experience, in November 2014 I completed an enriching project that catapulted my Disney fervor into something quite scholarly. As a student of Arizona State University’s Barrett, The Honors College, I was to spend two semesters developing a thesis on a subject of my choosing. What better way to combine entertainment and education than to add some fantastic flavor to an academic endeavor?
An Epcot enthusiast, I realized I could translate my passion for the community-turned-theme park into a piece of research that would explore its evolution. More specifically, I wanted to identify the interrelations between technology and culture in this artificial, yet awesome environment. Thus I set off on a one-year journey that would be as amazing and personally fulfilling as venturing to Epcot for the first time some 15 years ago.

Man Challenges Gaston From ‘Beauty and The Beast’ To Push-Up Contest, Gets Put To Shame (Video)

Recently a man decided to declare to Gaston from Beauty and the Beast at Walt Disney World that he was in fact stronger than him. LeFou immediately fainted.
Gaston of course was having none of this, and asked the man what his challenge was to prove such a claim. The response: push-up contest! It did not end well for the man.
Click on over the other side to see the video, as well as the video this gentleman clearly did not watch before deciding to foolishly challenge Gaston and his magnificent chin.
