Boondock Saints Game For iOS The Boondock Saints Mobile Game
Platform: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch App
Developer: Boondock Saints, LLC
Price: $2.99
iTunes

The brothers McManus have come to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch in the form of a duel stick shooter game, complete with its own story that lives up to the characters from the cult film The Boondock Saints.

Let me first say that I like the idea of this game, which was probably overly ambitious given the platform. Players can choose either Connor or Murphy to charge into each level to do some mindless shooting with a range of weapons. The 14 total levels also feature gameplay by Noah and Romeo at certain points. After accomplishing each mission, you get a tattoo to show your experience.

The mobile game nails most characterization of the Boondock Saints movie, but the basic mechanics make the gameplay painfully slow as well as the response time to movement. And while I chose to play this game on a handheld device, the controls may be better with the larger screen on an iPad.

Still, like many of the very first arcade games in the ’80s, someone with skillful hand-eye coordination and lots of practice can definitely succeed.

Boondock Saints: The Lost Gig
Written by Troy Duffy & JB Love
Pencils and Cover by Toby Cypress
12-Gauge/Innfusion
Release Date: April 16, 2010

I would like to start off by saying I am a huge Boondock Saints fan. I love both movies and own both of them on Blu-Ray. I was extremely excited by the idea of more Saints in comic form, especially when I found out the first story was revolving around one of my favorite characters, Rocco.

The Lost Gig is basically set as an extra mission that Rocco and the Saints go on somewhere in the time frame of the first movie. It would actually fit in right after the saints have the rope incident but right before they go to the porn place. It definitely fits in with the characterization of the first film, especially since Troy Duffy is co-writing.

Comic Review: Boondock Saints: In Nomine Patris

Boondock Saints: In Nomine Patris 1 & 2
Written by Troy Duffy & JB Love
Art by Guus Floor
Cover by Chris Brunner
12-Gauge/Innfusion
Price: $3.99 each
Release Date: May 26 & July 14, 2010

The second in the new line of Boondock Saints comics, In Nomine Patris, is the beginning of the secret history of Il Duce. This to me is a great way to kick off a serious stint in the comic line for the saints. It introduces all the characters and a lot about the history of their “business” without prior knowledge needed. This series does a great job in treating it like every issue can be someone’s first issue.

Basically in both issues we learn how Il Duce becomes a vigilante and why he kept it up throughout his entire life. We also learn how he got his vest and we learn it all through Connor and Murphy’s eyes. The story is great and very interesting. I really enjoyed reading it. There are a few storytelling issues here and there, but it is more of a layout issue than a script issue. It is very hard to tell where we are in the story because of the jumps between past, present, and future. Something that would help is different times of day for each setting so there would be a more distinct coloring for each one. But that is just a minor issue which is great for Troy Duffy‘s second and third comic.

If you read Geeks of Doom, you know I’ve been one of the biggest supporters of a sequel to 1999’s The Boondock Saints for as long as one has been rumored, which is about eleven years now. And from the moment Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day became official, any time anything was released about the movie, I was jumping on it. Various different posts came of it all, including interviews with stars Clifton Collins Jr. and Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus.

Because of my love for the first and my being proud of its Boston roots, that made me a likely biased candidate to review the film when it was released on DVD and Blu-ray, but it was in-fact only fitting that I do so. I did enjoy the movie after all was said and done, but surprisingly, there were also things that I was not a big fan of and I’ll be sure to share them all!

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day movie poster

Since Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day finally came out in theaters on October 30, 2009, the goodies to report have been scarce. And Looking at the number in the title, you may think that this is a bad news post, but alas, this is not so!

All Saints Day had a budget of only $8 million, and with it now at the $11 million mark, that’s a big score for the film. Keep in mind, this is an indie movie, so it was only released in a maximum 500 theaters (as compared to the 3,461 theaters that giant movies like Avatar get), so this is a strong showing. In fact, these numbers now make Boondock Saints II the top-grossing film with a limited release in 2009 and Apparition Films’ top-grossing film of all time.
