Clive Barker

Clive Barker has never achieved the raging success in cinema that he has as a celebrated author of horror and fantasy; his debut feature Hellraiser spawned a never-ending franchise that is a classic case of the law of diminishing returns in practice, while follow-ups Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions were either re-cut or mishandled by studio executives who hired the prolific Barker to deliver on screen what came naturally to him on the page only to realize they never understood quite what his fiction was all about, nor did they want to.

But that has not deterred Barker from signing with Amazon Studios, the entertainment content development division of Amazon.com, to rewrite their action-horror film project Zombies Vs. Gladiators.

Nightbreed

On February 16, 1990, Nightbreed, British horror author and filmmaker Clive Barker‘s second feature as a director, opened in theaters across the country after having its release delayed for months to allow for extensive re-editing and the creation of elaborate visual effects. Barker based the script on Cabal, his 1988 novella about a tormented man named Aaron Boone who is framed as a serial killer by his maniacal psychiatrist Dr. Decker and finds acceptance and amazing powers in an underground tribe of benevolent but frightening creatures known as the Nightbreed. The young director had planned for Nightbreed to be the “Star Wars of horror” and was given an $11 million budget – his biggest yet – to realize his vision.

The film was shot on location in Calgary, Canada, and at England’s historic Pinewood Studios, the facility which has hosted the productions of nearly every James Bond adventure as well as various Superman and Batman films, Aliens and Alien 3, and most recently Captain America: The First Avenger and the upcoming two-part adaptation of The Hobbit. Ralph McQuarrie, the late conceptual artist who helped George Lucas sell 20th Century Fox (the studio that would eventually distribute Nightbreed theatrically) on the first Star Wars, was brought in by Barker to provide important matte paintings and a mural that would depict the dark and twisted history of the Breed during a key sequence in the film.

Hellraiser

Now that its feature film fortunes have dried with the proposed remake stalling and its latest DTV video being greeted with bombastic derision from longtime fans, it looks like Hellraiser is setting its sights on the world of television.

A new series based on the horror movie franchise that began in 1987 with the classic original written and directed by Clive Barker (and based on his novella “The Hellbound Heart”) is being developed over at Sonar Entertainment, formerly RHI Entertainment, the company started by television miniseries impresario Robert Halmi Sr. Halmi and his son Robert Halmi Jr. are no longer with Sonar.

Remember that trailer for the upcoming low-budget sequel Hellraiser: Revelations, the ninth installment in the totally-run-its-course Hellraiser film franchise?

Well, Hellraiser creator Clive Barker saw the new trailer and took to Twitter to make sure everyone knows that not only does this new offering NOT come from his mind, but that it doesn’t even come from his ass.

Hello,my friends. I want to put on record that the flic out there using the word Hellraiser IS NO FUCKIN’ CHILD OF MINE!

I have NOTHING to do with the fuckin’ thing. If they claim its from the mind of Clive Barker,it’s a lie. It’s not even from my butt-hole.
