Watch Now: Trailer For Douglas Adams’ ‘Dirk Gently’ Inspired By Doctor Who

As many of you know, while he was working on the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams cut his teeth and refined his craft with the crew of Doctor Who, back when Tom Baker was portraying the fourth incarnation of the Doctor. Adams served as script editor for the series, and also is credited as writing a few episodes of the show.
One of the most infamous episodes written by Adams was once called Shada. This Doctor Who serial was never completed or fully broadcast due to industrial action and protests that happened at the time. Where am I going with this? Well, as it turns out, the BBC is about to launch a new show called Dirk Gently; which is based on the novels Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul written by Douglas Adams. These two novels, in part, form the basis of the unaired Shada episode of Doctor Who. Essentially, what happened was Adams decided to take the concepts he really enjoyed from the unaired episode and created a whole new adventure focusing on the detective known as Dirk Gently.

Minimalist ‘Doctor Who’ Posters Capture Each Doctor’s Personality

One of the greatest aspects of Doctor Who is that even though the Doctor will always be the Doctor, each incarnation brings some unique personality aspects to the Time Lord. Part of these personality traits are also embodied in the manner of image that the Doctor portrays himself: by costume.
From the long scarf of the Tom Baker days, to the crime against fashion that was the Sixth Doctor’s outfit, to Matt Smith declaring that both bow ties and fezzes are cool, each Doctor’s costume is as much a part of the mythos of the Time Lord as the sonic screwdriver, or even the TARDIS itself. Doctor Who fan and graphic artist Alex Freeman recognizes this. Relatively known among geek fandom online for his minimalist designs for Star Wars book covers, Freeman has now taken on the challenge of applying his minimalist art approach to each Doctor’s personality and appearance. Using simple outlines and colors, he making posters for each Doctor, and his Flickr page states they should be on sale soon – providing there’s enough interest.

More ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Day News: Vashta Nerada Return In The Final Adventure Game
By cGt2099
December 3rd, 2010 at 9:28 pm
If you’re a Doctor Who fan and the Christmas Special as well as the Doctor Who Proms being aired on BBC America just aren’t enough Time Lord insanity for you, then you’re in luck: the BBC has announced that the fourth and final Doctor Who Adventure Game is to be released online just after A Christmas Carol is screened on UK television.
The best part? The “monsters” in this game are the Vashta Nerada, the swarming shadows that consume flesh. Fans may remember that the Vashta Nerada first appeared in Silence In The Library and Forest of the Dead, the two episodes written by Steven Moffat that introduced the character of River Song. And while those episodes saw David Tennant‘s 10th Doctor attempt to outwit the shadow creatures, in this online game, it will be Matt Smith‘s 11th incarnation of the Doctor who’ll battle the threat, along with companion Amy Pond.

Doctor Who fans will remember last month that current Time Lord, Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, made an appearance on the U.S. talk show The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
Those who watched the episode and interview with Matt Smith may recall that there were some vague references to a particular “musical number” that Ferguson jokingly worried that might “leak online.” That particular musical skit is now on the web, and Ferguson tweeted it out today lightheartedly mentioning it had finally been “leaked.” You can see the music intro they did for the show (which concludes with a special guest), as well as the full interview with Matt Smith below.
