Comicpalooza 2011

During Memorial Day weekend (May 27-29, 2011), Comicpalooza held its 4th annual multi-genre convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. I attended the first two days of this three-day convention. First of all, this was my first big convention in Texas and the layout of the convention center was massive. The whole convention took place on the 3rd level of this massive convention center.

The highlights of the convention for me were the opportunities to interact with comic creators, comic fans, and celebrities. I spent a short amount of time on Friday observing the entire Con floor and chatting with various artists and writers in Artist Alley. I also checked out a few things in the Dealers Room. Before leaving for the day, I sat in on panel with comic writer Chris Roberson (I-Zombie), Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies), and Brian Denham (Zombie Fairy Tales) on a panel titled Comics & Zombies. By the name of the panel, you can guess what was discussed.

It’s a big week for BBC America. Not only is the hype running fast and loud for the upcoming season of Doctor Who launching this weekend, but the channel made the official announcement yesterday that they have acquired a fan-favorite series, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. BBC America has signed a deal with NBC Universal to air the two-part miniseries that launched in 2004, as well as Seasons 1 through 4.

The reimagined series, which had its initial run on the Syfy Channel from 2003 to 2009, was executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick and starred Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park and British actor Jamie Bamber.

I don’t want to be human! I want to see gamma rays. I want to hear x-rays, and I want to smell dark matter. I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws and feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over me. I’m a machine, and I could know much more.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan is the third prequel movie that has been made within the realms of the brilliant Ronald D. Moore and David Eick re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica. The others were Razor and Caprica (which is more of a spinoff and setup for its own new series set to begin in 2010), and they offer us a deeper look into the many stories that we never saw as we journeyed through the wonderful five-season run. While Razor concentrated on another Battlestar ship and added many details to one of the stories we briefly saw in the series, The Plan is a unique and even odd kind of animal that takes us to many different points from the show.

To be completely honest, there’s not really a firm story here, but more of a completely alternative perspective to the intense and familiar events of the series. Do not think that that means that there is no story at all, though — there certainly is, and the more you think about the new things that you see within the film, the more you related them to the overall story, and this is where this movie really works well. The Plan actually plays out almost like the deleted scenes in your DVD special features section, which is kind of strange, but again, unique in its own little way.

BSG

Some reports have been making their way around the internet today that actor and director Edward James Olmos has been talking about the possibility of more Battlestar Galactica stories coming if his new prequel movie, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan does really well tomorrow on DVD (stay tuned for our review soon!).

To be fair, if you’ll recall, Olmos appeared on Attack of the Show! back at the beginning of August (Read: Could Big Numbers For “˜The Plan’ Mean More “˜Battlestar Galactica’?) and made this same announcement, so it’s not really news. What is new in all of this, is how many more DVDs he is now saying need to be sold (a LOT more) in order to get more BSG and some information what stories we might be able to see exactly.

While talking to Collider, Olmos upped the number that Universal Studios told him need to be sold from the original 350,000-500,000 he told Attack of the Show! to a whopping 5 Million! You could be assume that this is an overall numerical accomplishment and not just the movie’s release date numbers he first mentioned. There’s no doubt that the fans are faithful enough to pull it off, either, so we can all hope.

‘Battlestar Galactica’ Prequel ‘The Plan’ DVD Details & New Trailer

The Plan

The Plan is the new Battlestar Galactica prequel that fills us in on some of the storylines that we’ve seen, but from the other side of the fence: the Cylons’ point of view. The movie is directed by Admiral William Adama himself (Edward James Olmos) and will feature most of your favorite stars and characters. A teaser trailer for the movie was released a while back (and has since been pulled), but now you can see the new trailer for the show right here!

Back in August, Olmos appeared on Attack of the Show and pleaded with the fans to make sure that they purchase the movie when it comes out on October 27, 2009, because if it sold around 350,000 to 500,000 copies in its first day of release, we would see “many plans” (Read: Could Big Numbers For “˜The Plan’ Mean More “˜Battlestar Galactica’?). No one knows what exactly this means, but one would assume there’s a lot more DVD movies like this to be made if the success keeps flowing.

Click on over to check out the trailer and to read the dirty DVD details!
