‘Empire Strikes Back’ Screen Test From 1978 Reveals Boba Fett’s Original All-White Costume

Boba Fett

If you’re a die hard devotee of all things pertaining to Star Wars then it might be common knowledge to you that when the saga’s iconic bounty hunting scumbag Boba Fett was first introduced (in live-action form) in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, his stylish multi-colored armor was originally intended to be an all-white ensemble, as envisioned by conceptual artist Joe Johnston.

The white variant of the costume was never used, but in 1978 prior to the commencement of principal photography on Empire, Johnston’s original design was briefly brought to life in a rare black and white screen test. You can watch a five-minute video excerpt from that test and see some images here below.

Han Solo and Boba Fett

Yesterday we reported that Disney and Lucasfilm were ramping up their long-term grand plans for Star Wars with the announcement that they would be developing a series of movies set apart from Episode VII and on that would focus on individual characters from the Star Wars universe, including a possible Yoda movie.

Entertainment Weekly today broke an exclusive addendum to that revelation with the news that both Han Solo, the roguish but lovable space smuggler that helped make Harrison Ford a star in the original Star Wars movies, and Boba Fett, the masked intergalactic bounty hunter who had little screen time in the original trilogy but has since become a huge fan favorite character, might also be headlining their own standalone movies.

Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back

We’re less than two weeks away from the release of the Star Wars original and prequel trilogies on Blu-Ray and now Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive look at a deleted scene from The Empire Strikes Back to be included among the set’s generous selection of bonus features. You can check out the scene below this article.

Running less than a minute, the scene is an additional dialogue exchange between Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) during the first act of the film after the former smuggler announces his intention to leave the Rebellion so he can pay his debt to Jabba the Hutt. The scene as it played in the theatrical version perfectly established the burgeoning romantic tension between Han and Leia, so this additional dialogue is redundant. But even in this needless exchange you can feel the sparks flying between these two; Ford and Fisher’s acting is superb (a marked improvement over the first Star Wars) and their chemistry is palpable, thanks to the excellent, nuanced direction by the late Irvin Kershner and the beautiful screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and the late Leigh Brackett.

The Star Wars trilogies will be released on Blu-ray on September 16, 2011.

Leia's O Face? For those who celebrate Wookiee Life Day as opposed to all of the other end-of-year holidays, we have a treat for you… the Star Wars Holiday Special in 5 minutes, specially edited to only focus on the “live-action” stuff. Watch it here below.

If you haven’t seen the Holiday Special before, it’s certainly a gem from its time. If you thought Expanded Universe debates and Originals vs. Prequels debates turn out to divide fans, wait until you get in the middle of an argument about this thing.

Complete with Bea Arthur and Jefferson Starship, The Star Wars Holiday Special first aired in November 1978 and also featured Han and Chewie, Luke Skywalker with the WORST possible haircut ever, and Princess Leia singing a song that is sure to induce brain hemorrhages.

The original full special also marked a few firsts: one of which was the very first appearance of Boba Fett (before his debut in The Empire Strikes Back) in a short animated story involving Luke, Han, Chewie, the Droids, and some weird beast of burden Fett rides.

Star WarsBeing a big Star Wars fan, I really dig it when fans make some “Real Star Wars” Photoshop Art; meaning if Star Wars was real and in our world, what would it look like?

This image to the right (click to enlarge) hit the web recently, originally over at Reddit, of an AT-AT roaming through a neighborhood dealing with a Snowpocalypse on the level of the Battle of Hoth — quite fitting; but aside from that, it looks brilliant.

The Reddit caption for this image was, “You are walking to your car when you see this. What do you do? What. Do. You. Do?”, which is not bad, but I wondered whether our readers here could do better… Can you think of a better caption? Let us know in the comments below.

Also, I’m a sucker for this kind of “Real Star Wars” Photoshop Art, so if you spot any online, be sure to let us know here at Geeks Of Doom.
