Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz and Stephen Gammell

Just about a year ago it was reported that Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were working on an adaptation of the horror books Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Now comes word that a new writer is being brought in for the project.

It’s being reported that CBS Films has hired screenwriter John August to come in and take over writing duties. August has previously worked on multiple Tim Burton scripts, including Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dark Shadows, and Frankenweenie.

Frankenweenie

Disney will be releasing Tim Burton’s latest stop-motion animated feature Frankenweenie this Friday. So to mark the special occasion, the studio has unveiled six vintage posters inspired by some of the great horror movie classics. Like Sparky, which is a dog that has Frankenstein-like qualities, these posters feature the other household pets seen in the film sharing some sort of trait with a classic horror monster.

Check out all six vintage posters below.

Based on the live-action short of the same name, Frankenweenie follows a boy named Victor who successfully brings his beloved dog back to life by using the miracles of science. When his classmates find out about this, they attempt to do the same thing in order to win the school science fair. However, their attempts do not warrant the same results as Victor’s did.

A group of actors have been assembled to voice roles in Tim Burton‘s feature adaptation of his own short film, Frankenweenie.

And as for the names joining the film, they’re all familiar with the ways of Burton. The first four voices signed include Martin Landau, who appeared in the director’s Ed Wood and provided a voice in the Burton-produced 9; Winona Ryder, who starred in both Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice; Catherine O’Hara, who also starred in Beetlejuice and offered her voice for The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Martin Short, who was one of the many stars in Mars Attacks!, will both be voicing five different characters each.

Dark Shadows

Even more vampires are in the news today, as it’s being reported that after Alice in Wonderland, director Tim Burton will next tackle Dark Shadows with his constant, Johnny Depp. The proposed remake of the 1966 daytime soap opera had been talked about plenty, but it was never clear when Depp and Burton would get together for it. As you might imagine, a show that featured vampires, werewolves, ghosts, monsters, zombies, time travel, and other wild and scary elements was a bit edgy for 1960s television, let alone daytime TV. Depp will play a vampire named Barnabas Collins

Producer Graham King was out promoting The Young Victoria recently, and in a group interview, he made the announcement.

The Pitch That Sold Jerry Bruckheimer On A ‘Prince Of Persia’ Movie

Prince of Persia

Jordan Mechner and John August posted a cool little video on their blogs recently. The video is a collection of clips from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time that were specially edited together back in 2003. The purpose of this was to convey his vision of what a movie version of the game should be like, and was used in his pitch to Jerry Bruckheimer and The Walt Disney Company. Most just paint a picture with their words when making a pitch, but Mechner figured what better way to paint a picture than to use key elements from the actual game, and he was right — Bruckheimer bought the pitch and six years later, the movie is set for official release on May 28, 2010.

Mechner is the creator of the Prince of Persia video game series and August is best known for his work as writer on Tim Burton movies like Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. The duo wrote the script for The Sands of Time movie together.
