Last week on FX’s newest great series Legion, David Haller (Dan Stevens) had “memory work” done to investigate his childhood and help remember where and when his powers started. He is beginning to settle into his new life at Summerland with his “hands off” girlfriend Syd (Rachel Keller), psychic “memory artist” Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris) and memories of his dead best friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza). He is still haunted by demons from his past, like the Devil with Yellow Eyes, and threats to his future, like the mysterious The Eye (Mackenzie Gray) who has his sister (Katie Aselton). Despite all the complexities of David’s world and the eccentric characters, the star of this series is the style and substance of the world created by Noah Hawley and director Michael Uppendahl. Legion does not at all feel like your typical Marvel product, or any other superhero show on television. It is a mind melting explosion of originality, one of the freshest feeling new shows of 2017 thus far.

Last week’s premiere of the longly awaited new FX & Marvel series Legion, lived up to any and all expectations. It was in this humble reviewer’s opinion, one of the best pilot episodes in TV history. Dan Stevens plays David Haller, a mutant with many abilities, many which remain unseen. We watch Haller’s journey through mental wards, where he befriends Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) and woos Syd (Rachel Keller). The whole first half felt like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest on an acid trip. Haunted by visions and powers, Haller escaped the institution after kissing Syd and switching bodies with her, but quickly finds himself locked in another room being interrogated by unknown government officials, who are either trying to harness his mutant powers or destroy the potential threat. He is inevitably rescued by Syd along with a team of mutants led by Melanie Bird (Jean Smart). Bring on episode 2!

With comic book heroes in constant demand on television and mental illness a hit at that box office with M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, the time seems perfect for FX to roll out Legion. Legion, based on the Marvel Comics character created by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is one of the most powerful mutants in Marvel’s X-Men universe. Real name David Charles Haller, Legion is the son of Professor X himself. He suffers from a variety of mental health issues, among them split personalities, with each personality having its own power. These include telepathy, telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and time travel.
FX is the destination for antiheroes. From Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy to James Delaney on Taboo, Legion, which is a Marvel Television production, will fit right in.
