In Better Call Saul Episode 1.9 “Pimento,” Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) finally has a way to make it out of the mailroom, so to speak, at the Hamlin, Hamlin, and McGill law offices. Jimmy has stumbled upon a valid case-action law suit, but it’s too big for him and his lawyer-on-hiatus older brother, Chuck (Michael McKean), to handle. So, much to his reluctance and at Chuck’s behest, Jimmy agrees to reach out to his nemesis Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) at HHM on the case to go after the Sandpaper Crossing Assisted Living facility, which has seemingly been mishandling (i.e., stealing) the finances of their elderly residents.

Meanwhile, in an effort to help his widowed daughter-in-law and his granddaughter with their finances, Mike (Jonathan Banks) takes on a new gig outside his little parking lot clerk booth. After years in law enforcement, the former Philly cop is taking an off-the-books job, so to speak.

Better Call Saul Episode 108

Warning – Spoilers for Better Call Saul Episode 1.8 “RICO.”

AMC’s Better Call Saul Episode 1.8 “RICO” aired Monday night and we got a lot of backstory for Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk), how he became a lawyer, and the start of why he hates Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) his brother Chuck’s (Michael McKean) law partner, so much. We also got a glimpse of how Mike (Jonathan Banks) started his journey into the underworld, so to speak, after being a veteran cop on the Philly PD.

The network has released the “most talked about scene” from the episode, which sees Chuck mindlessly taking steps into the outside world, much to Jimmy’s shock. AMC has also released a behind-the-scenes featurette that’s a 3 1/2-minute “Inside Look” at the episode, which shows the two brothers coming together and working on such a big case, as well as a little bit about Kim (Rhea Seehorn), Jimmy’s friend/love interest.

Better Call Saul Episode 108 Chuck and Jimmy sneak peek

Better Call Saul
Episode 1.8 “RICO”
Directed by Colin Bucksey
Written by Gordon Smith
Starring Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Kerry Condon
AMC
Air Date: Monday, March 23, 2015, 10pm

Better Call Saul Episode 1.8 “RICO,” another piece of the Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) puzzle is revealed. Throughout this debut season, we’ve wondered how it is that the Saul we know from Breaking Bad went from Slippin’ Jimmy the swindler to Jimmy McGill, Esquire. We know his brother Chuck (Michael McKean) was a successful lawyer and partner at a prominent firm, Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, so following in his older brother’s footsteps would make sense. But, the dynamics between the brothers so far hasn’t seemed like Chuck took his younger brother under his wing.

In Episode 1.8, we find out how Jimmy became a lawyer and how he went about earning that law degree from the University of American Samoa, a correspondence school, the diploma of which we first saw on Breaking Bad on the wall of his office at the strip mall.
