Fresh off the news that FX has already renewed the coolest and most original superhero property on television, Marvel’s Legion returns tonight after its most bonkers episode ever last week. And THAT is saying something. We finally got to see David (Dan Stevens) use his powers with reckless abandon and it was glorious, as he literally exploded his way through Division 3 soldiers in order to free sister Amy (Katie Aselton). It was from her he finally learned some real truth; he was adopted, he’s not crazy, and he may or may not have a mutant living inside his head… the Yellow Eyed Devil… or is it Lenny (Aubrey Plaza)? Lenny, who terrorized David and girlfriend Syd (Rachel Keller) in a wild and scary finale, which all led to the jaw dropping climax where everyone was casually sitting around a therapy circle, and LENNY was the shrink! I am not exaggerating when I say the closing moments of each of Legion‘s episodes have left me floored. The show is awe inspiringly original, the visuals and sounds… so immersive. I look so forward to each week. Let’s get to it.

Air date: March 8th, 2017

FX’s 2017 hot streak continues as their wholly original Marvel comics adaptation, Legion, returns tonight for episode 5. Last week we delved deeper into David Haller’s psyche and it is both fascinating and horrifying. David (Dan Stevens) has unknown power, and may be purposely misleading Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris) and Syd (Rachel Keller) from finding out the truth to his abilities and his past. When they are unable to access things in David’s mind, they seek out truth the old fashioned way, tracking down David’s ex and find out one crucial piece of information; Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) is actually Benny… a dude. Why is David openly hiding this? Is he openly hiding it? Could Lenny/Benny be the evil Yellow Eyed Devil that haunts David? District 3 is getting close, and they spring a trap for Syd, Ptonomy, and Kerry Loudermilk (Amber Midthunder), that sees Kerry (and by extension Cary Loudermilk) left injured, as David returned right in time.

Legion
Episode 1.4 “Chapter 4”
Written by Noah Hawley
Directed by Larysa Kondracki
Created by Noah Hawley & Stan Lee
Starring Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton, Jean Smart
FX Network
Air date: March 1st, 2017

Legion has set a pretty high bar for only three episodes. Marvel’s new series on FX is daring, in that nothing about it feels like anything you’ve ever seen in a superhero show before. In fact, without a hint or random word (mutant) thrown in, you may not even realize you’re watching a show based on X-Men comics, created by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz. David Haller (Dan Stevens) is one of the most powerful mutants in the world, with still yet undefined and uncontrolled powers including telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation, etc. Living in Summerland, a Professor X-style school in the woods, Melanie Bird (Jean Smart) is trying to use David’s powers to help stop potential threats from a government organization out to stop them – Division 3. They have kidnapped David’s sister Amy (Katie Aselton), and are trying to lure him out. Meanwhile with the help of his girlfriend Syd (Rachel Keller) (who he cannot physically touch), and Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris), they are digging in David’s head and exploring his memories for clues to how far his powers truly reach. And what’s with that blob-like yellow eyed man?!?!

Legion
Episode 1.3 “Chapter 3”
Written by Peter Calloway
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Created by Noah Hawley & Stan Lee
Starring Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton, Jean Smart
FX Network
Air date: February 22nd, 2017

Last week on FX’s newest great series Legion, David Haller (Dan Stevens) had “memory work” done to investigate his childhood and help remember where and when his powers started. He is beginning to settle into his new life at Summerland with his “hands off” girlfriend Syd (Rachel Keller), psychic “memory artist” Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris) and memories of his dead best friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza). He is still haunted by demons from his past, like the Devil with Yellow Eyes, and threats to his future, like the mysterious The Eye (Mackenzie Gray) who has his sister (Katie Aselton). Despite all the complexities of David’s world and the eccentric characters, the star of this series is the style and substance of the world created by Noah Hawley and director Michael Uppendahl. Legion does not at all feel like your typical Marvel product, or any other superhero show on television. It is a mind melting explosion of originality, one of the freshest feeling new shows of 2017 thus far.

Stan Lee's Los Angeles Comic Con 2016

Stan Lee’s Los Angeles Comic Con (SLLACC), formerly Comikaze, has grown by leaps and bounds in only a few years, to the point where weekend attendance is approaching that of the famed San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). Last year, it was about 90,000, and I’d wager this year’s tally will surpass that.

And much like SDCC about a dozen or so years ago, when interest and attendance seemingly skyrocketed within the span of a year, SLLACC’s sudden growth has come with some pains.
