With the big announcement over the last week of Peter Capaldi turning out to be the next Doctor for Doctor Who, I thought it might be timely to take a look at some of the work he’s been well-known for. The series, The Thick Of It, showcases one his most iconic characters: Malcolm Tucker, the foul-mouthed spin doctor in the British Government.

The series spawned a movie called In The Loop, where the government crosses paths with the American government in the planning for invasion of a Middle Eastern country.

The story begins with the leaders of the respective nations already planning on progressing forward with a preemptive strike on a country, in a comic parody of historic political events during the post-9/11 era. While the leaders convene committees and meetings across the globe to push the case for conflict, other operatives behind the scenes work on efforts to stop the warmongering.

The Doctor Who TARDISblend

After many months of speculation, the BBC announced today that their next Doctor for the long-loved Doctor Who will be none other than the brilliant Peter Capaldi. The reveal has been perhaps the most positive announcement for the BBC and Doctor Who in its entire 50-year history, with only small amounts of criticism being drowned out by the praise from fans online.

During TARDISblend 67, we are joined by special guest Andrew Sorcini of The Drill Down, and we discuss our reactions to the announcement, and the potential we face in future episodes. Peter Capaldi The Thick Of It

Now that we know that Peter Capaldi Is The Next Doctor On Doctor Who, it’s time to get more acquainted with the actor. The 55-year-old Scottish actor and film director has been in over 40 films and television shows throughout his career, including an appearance in the 2008 episode of Doctor Who, “The Fires Of Pompeii,” as well as a role in Torchwood: Children of Earth, a spin-off of Doctor Who. In this summer’s World War Z, Capaldi played a World Health Organization doctor, but in a bit of foreshadowing, his role is listed solely as “WHO Doctor”!

From 2005 – 2012, the actor starred in The Thick of It, a British TV comedy series where he played Malcolm Tucker, director of communications for the British government. In the show, Tucker is a spindoctor as well as an enforcer of the party line who is feared and disliked because of his aggressive, hurtful, and sometimes violent tactics. Basically, he’s not very likable.

In the second episode of series four, Tucker can’t recall the name of Star Wars and with obvious disdain for the movie, he tries to describe it. Watch the clip here below.
