Witchblade Vol 8Witchblade
Volume 8: War of the Witchblades
Written By Ron Marz

Top Cow Productions
Release Date: September 14, 2010

I have been reading Witchblade on and off for the last 2 years now. Although all of it has been in trade format, it would be hard to find at least over 130 single issues. But that would be crazy, unless you had the time, money, and resources to make it happen. But believe me, trades are the way to go for catching up on almost anything if possible. Witchblade is a unique idea that I first learned about a couple of years ago when I saw the TV show. Later on I then discovered it was based on a comic book series, and it made me want to pick it up to see what it was like. And I was not disappointed.

Witchblade Volume 8 is called “War of the Witchblades” and it means just that. Sara Pezzini at one point was the sole bearer of the Witchblade, which is a powerful and ancient weapon in the form of a gauntlet which balances the forces between light and darkness. Dani Baptiste became the new bearer of the Witchblade when Sara discovered she was pregnant a couple trades ago. She decided the only way to keep her baby safe was to let go of the mystical weapon. But since the events of “First Born,” Sara and Dani decided to each share a half of the Witchblade and its powers.

Price: $2.99
Release date: March 03, 2010 [#135]

I came to Witchblade armed with nothing but Wikipedia and an open mind, and as such, I concede that great chunks of the story probably went over my head. But long-running series like this one can’t do well unless new readers can come in a hundred issues in and still find something to appreciate. While I didn’t find the experience unpleasant, there wasn’t much that compelled me to explore further, either.

A quick summary for the other noobs out there: Witchblade centers around Sara Pezzini, an NYPD detective and the current wielder of said Witchblade, a powerful supernatural weapon that can shift its shape to protect and aid the user. These two issues in particular, #134 and #135, are the first two books of a three-part arc about Sara tracking down the green-haired cyborg assassin called Aphrodite IV, who works for the shadowy, uncreatively named organization Cyberdata.

Price: $3.99; Release date: February 24, 2010

Marvel and DC have been getting most of the mainstream buzz over big event storylines like Blackest Night and Siege, but they aren’t the only game in town when it comes to crossover events. Top Cow has debuted several crossovers in recent years that have introduced major changes for their characters, and that trend looks like it will continue in 2010.

For those who haven’t been following Top Cow closely as of late, the trend began with a mini-series called First Born. That series saw the birth of a daughter to Sara Pezzini and Jackie Estacado, better known as Witchblade and The Darkness, respectively.

In 2008, First Born was followed up with a mini-series called Broken Trinity. This event established Witchblade, Darkness, and an angelic warrior known as Angelus as the three primary forces in Top Cow’s supernatural universe. Their individual weapons became known as artifacts and by the end of Broken Trinity we found out the three were not alone, and that a total of 13 artifacts existed in the world.

Release date: December 23, 2009

First of all, I’d like to know why it’s always the same people who get all the super powers. The same girl gets to be TWO superheroes, and I get squat. It’s completely unfair.

Spinning out of Top Cow’s Witchblade, Angelus follows the continuing story of Danielle Baptiste, former police officer and superhero Witchblade, as she relocates from New York to New Orleans. The relocation has more to do with just a change in scenery: she has now become Angelus, warrior of the Eternal Light, and with her new lesbian lover Finch, she is trying to navigate her new path in life. But she may be caught up in something she doesn’t understand. Her angel second in command Sabine plots behind her back and dispatches a team of warriors into the depths of Hell to retrieve a mysterious object.
