Frank Grillo Will Play Crossbones In ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

It only feels like the rumor that Frank Grillo would play Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldiersurfaced last week. Maybe that’s because it was last week. So today, there is confirmation that Grillo will be playing as the skilled marksman in the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. But what does this mean for the titular villain?
Rumors of Grillo testing for Crossbones came about when the actor tweeted some Marvel Studios related material along with the hashtag Captain America – these tweets were later deleted. There were no other actors reportedly testing for the role of the deadly assassin. In fact it was the first time the villain’s name came up. The news of Grillo’s casting was confirmed earlier today. Now how the villain will be introduced into the story remains a mystery.
Originally the character was brought into Captain America lore when the Red Skull himself recruited him to be his However, seeing that Hugo Weaving isn’t too keen on reprising his role as the Red Skull, it’s unlikely that they will use that storyline. So it should be interesting to see how Anthony and Joe Russo will introduce the villain in the sequel and how he will receive his moniker.
Grillo joins Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan who reprise their respective roles and Anthony Mackie who plays The Falcon. Scarlett Johannson is also confirmed to appear as the Black Widow.
Some of Grillo’s most memorable roles were in The Grey, End of Watch, and Warrior. His upcoming roles include Gangster Squad and Zero Dark Thirty.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is due out for release on April 4, 2014.
