Syfy, known for its popular TV series like Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, and Warehouse 13, typically makes its presence known with panels and promotions at events like Comic-Con in San Diego and New York. Now, they’re branching out for the first time to South By Southwest (SXSW), currently underway in Austin, TX, and they’re making their presence known in a unique way – with a pop-up hotel!
The special pop-up hotel is part of the Defiance Container Village by Syfy located in a downtown parking lot and includes fully functional rooms featuring minimalist design, a 24-hour concierge service, round-the-clock security, their own bathroom and shower facilities, and twice daily maid service. The area is meant to promote the network’s upcoming television series and accompanying online game, Defiance.

The Defiance Container Village allows visitors to explore the futuristic world of Defiance, which premieres on Syfy on April 15, 2013 at 9/8c. Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Mia Kirshner all star in the show. Cast member Jesse Rath is pictured here above in one of the rooms in the hotel, which is comprised of four areas including three guest rooms as well as a communal lounge.
Per Syfy:
…a communal lounge open to guests and the public to relax, charge devices, use the internet and generally lounge in the futuristic environment.
Within the Defiance Container Village people were able to watch the show, play the game, mix with the cast and more. The Need/Want Social Bar proved particularly popular. A bar like no other, it featured an imaginative app that allowed visitors to express and share their personal needs and wants. The app then aggregated the collective results, posting them to the bar’s interactive wall and individual’s social feeds. Some lucky people even had their needs and wants fulfilled. The top trending want at this year’s SXSW Interactive – Bacon!
