Watch The Dancing Groot Scene From Marvel’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

Guardians of the Galaxy: Groot 02

It’s probably the most talked about scene in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, yet it doesn’t appear until the movie’s over. Soon after the film’s August 1st theatrical release, that scene was leaked online and fans went crazy for it. Now, Marvel has officially released the pre-credits* scene online for all to see.

Watch the video here down below.

The video shows dancing baby Groot, with Drax sitting nearby unsuspecting. I think everyone’s first thought upon seeing Groot in his fashion is that he resembled one of those plastic potted Groovin flowers that sing and dance, so not surprisingly, someone figured out a way to make their own dancing baby Groot using said item (see the step-by-step instructions). What is surprising is that Marvel missed out on such a good merch opportunity, which they might be working on to rectify — apparently, they have been “talking” about it for months; see the tweet below from Marvel’s Agent M (via Tor).

Looks like we’ll be waiting a while for this, if it every happens. There is a Rocket and Groot Sixth Scale Figure Set by Hot Toys that does come with a 1/6th scale Potted Groot, but it doesn’t dance and the set is $359.99.

By the way, if you’re wondering who did the dancing for baby Groot, it was none other than director James Gunn!

The director talked to Yahoo! about the scene, which features the Jackson 5 song “I Want You Back,” which Gunn said was his “favorite pop song ever.”

As for whose moves Baby Groot’s are based on, if you thought it might be former b-boy extraordinaire Vin Diesel, you’d be wrong. The real inspiration is even better: James Gunn himself. “Baby Groot dancing is 100 percent me,” he told us. “I was too embarrassed for anyone to be there, so I made everyone leave the room and I set up a camera and I videotaped myself dancing. Then I sent the video to the animators and had them animate over that. I begged them not to leak the video! Two of my closest friends came to an early screening and said “˜Hey, I recognize those moves! That’s you dancing isn’t it?!'” (Editor’s Note: Next ask: video of James Gunn dancing.)

*On the video Marvel released, they called this the “mid-credits” scene, likely because that’s where it was intended to be, but director James Gunn was worried people would leave the theater and not see it, so he moved it up so it appears just after what appears to be the end of the film. (Seriously, WHO leaves a Marvel movie before seeing their signature post-credits scene???).
