When you ask most people what the scariest movie ever made is, the typical answer is The Exorcist. While that is a classic, my pick has always been Richard Donner’s The Omen from 1976.
After two theatrical sequels and a made for TV 4th sequel, The Awakening, The Omen was remade and released (for obvious reasons) on June 6th, 2006 starring Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles. Now, A&E is bringing Damien Thorn to the small screen in Damien, and a first look video for the show has been released.
Check out the Damien first look video here below.
The Omen told the story of Ambassador Robert Thorn and his wife Katherine (Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) and the birth of their son Damien. Except it wasn’t “their” son. The claim was a stillbirth and Robert agrees to a last-minute switch with a baby whose mother died in childbirth. Little did anyone know that the new baby was actually the spawn of Satan himself, the Antichrist. At the child’s birthday party years later, a mysterious Rottweiler shows up, a nanny commits graphic suicide and a paparazzi photographer grabs all the pictures he can. The more photos he takes, the more the truth begins to be revealed. The photos reveal omens of future deaths… his included!
The acting and screenplay are fantastic, especially by Peck and photographer Jennings (David Warner). But the star of the film was Jerry Goldsmith’s Oscar winning score, which used gothic church music including “Ave Satani” composed by Goldsmith with Latin chanting included. Nine-year-old me vividly remembers running screaming from my living room to lock myself in my room because the music was so damn scary.
From Glen Mazzara, one of the executive producers of smash hits The Shield and The Walking Dead, the new 10-episode series will focus on adult Damien Thorn coping with life as the son of the Devil. The short 20-second spot features ominous music, flashes of the infamous Rottweilers, and a female voice speaking to him: “I bet you don’t remember much… that’ll change… it’s so good to see you again, Damien.” The AGAIN part is the hook for me and as a huge fan of the source material, I can’t wait to see where they take the story.
Damien is played by Bradley James, who currently is playing main character and zombie Liv’s (Rose McIver) zombie boyfriend Lowell on the CW’s iZombie. Between his cool undead musician and role as Arthur in BBC’s Merlin, James certainly has the pedigree to play someone supernatural… okay the Antichrist is definitely a step up in that department. Joining him in the cast are veteran actress Barbara Hershey, the recently killed off of The Following, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and Omid Abtahi.
Damien is set to debut for 10 episodes in 2016 on A&E. Something tells me they will try having a special episode on June 6th… maybe at 6:00 PM.
DAMIEN: “Damien” follows the adult life of Damien Thorn, the mysterious child from the 1976 motion picture who has grown up seemingly unaware of the satanic forces around him. Haunted by his past, Damien must now come to terms with his true destiny “” that he is the Antichrist. Damien stars Bradley James as Damien Thorn (“Merlin,” “Homeland”), along with Oscar® nominee Barbara Hershey (“Once Upon a Time”), Omid Abtahi (“Better Call Saul”) and Megalyn Echikunwoke (“House of Lies”).
