Scholastic has released the front and back cover images of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling‘s eagerly awaited seventh and final Harry Potter book. Cover art was created by Mary GrandPre, the acclaimed illustrator of all six previous U.S. editions of the Harry Potter books.

In a Scholastic press release, David Saylor, Scholastic’s Vice President and Creative Director, who has designed all seven Harry Potter covers, had the following to say regarding the covers:

The front cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows features a dramatic sky of oranges and golds. It depicts 17-year-old Harry with arm outstretched, reaching upward. The structures around Harry show evident destruction and in the shadows behind him, we see outlines of other people.

For the first time the cover is a wrap-around. On the back cover spidery hands are outstretched towards Harry. Only when the book is opened does one see a powerful image of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, his glowing red eyes peering out from his hood.

Last June, Rowling revealed that at least two characters would die in the final book.

Last week, Scholastic announced plans to tighten environmental standards for printing the 12 million copies of the 784-page book. All copies will be printed on paper that contains a 30% post-consumer waste fiber. Also, 65% of the 16,700 tons of paper used for the U.S. first printing will be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which sets the standards for responsible forest management. Scholastic will also print 100,000 deluxe editions on 100% post-consumer waste fiber.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is due in stores on July 21st at 12:01 a.m.
